ok, so even though i have played ff8 for years on and off, i never beat the game. until today.
so the part right after defeating ultimecia, where your at matrons house.

because of the time compression, squall is there at the same time he was a kid, and he witnesses ultimecia giving her sorceror powers to matron, and gives her the idea of SeeD and Garden. i got the thought that then, because he defeated ultimecia, all the events of the game occured, or squalls life occured. its like he created his own destiny, a huge cycle, and unless i am misinterpretating that, the game really concluded itself well.

sidenote: was that final cutscene trippy as hell or is it just me??

oh yeah...trippy as hell dude

well that basically is how i thaught it happened as well, yet oh so confusing yet somehow entirely understandable XP

He saw it, true. But, I don't believe he went back in time. He was merely shown what happened by Matron.

Found it quite funny. Because all throughout the game Squall was frustrated with the idea that he didn't know what the true meaning of SeeD was..

And it's like..

...Well Squall, why don't you ask that yourself ?

rofl :3

Yeah it was trippy as anything and it kind of asked the question. " What is Square smoking.." ?
But think it was meant to either show that Squall was lost in time and his past and future memories are disappearing before his eyes, or Squaresoft celebrated finishing the game a little too early.. [sly smile ]

Congrats on finishing it.

It is a "trippy" ending as you put it. It can be read in different ways the ending I guess. There are some great theories out there on the web that do make you think about the game in a whole different light.

In essence, it is just a huge, vicious cycle. Matron wasn't a Sorceress until Ultimecia was defeated by SeeD, aka Squall and the gang, and relenquished her powers to Matron. When Squall was lost in time/space, he arrived at the orphanage in his past and encountered his past self and past Matron. I believe that that event did occur and wasn't a memory, because, if I recall correctly, Matron tells Squall that he shouldn't be there. So I believe, in essence, he did create the situation by saving the world from Ultimecia.

That all can really screw with someone's mind. I wonder what Einstein would have thot of THAT situation?

I always thought Ultimecia took the place of the original sorceress who gave Edea her powers. Then I realised that Edea didn't actually know what Ultimecia looked like so she wouldn't have known...but surely Edea would have remembered the grown up Squall being there and mentioned it at the orphanage?
"Oh btw Squall, you were there too, just for your information."
Rather confusing ;-p

The ending confused me terribly. I realize that they had all lost their memory due to the GF's and such but I still cannot determine whether Squall was having a flashback, seeing things as they were 'occurring', or simply just losing his mind (which could be completely possible considering the rest of the ending...)
Final Fantasy VIII kind of confused me though and not in the best of ways. Too many loopholes and things to 'figure out'. D;

I believe that Edea was already a Sorceress. See was one while see was just a kid, remember?
However, It was tricky and stuff. It's like Edea was behind the whole plan (not just the SeeD).
Oh I have one more question on the same issue.
After this cut scene and the video where

Rinoa uses her Sorceress powers to find Squall
I believe that many of you watched the last video (the one at the party)
Squall isn't there... At first I thought he died. But then who is Rinoa talking to at the balcony of the Garden?
Cause she is moving her lips, and unless she inherited her mother's talent she wasn't a singer :P

In regards to Darth's question about Rinoa speaking to herself (haha) on the balcony,
if you watch past the very end of the credits, there is a small FMV sequence that shows her and Squall together out there. So, actually, she was talking to him...but the camera's battery died before Irvine and Selphie could film it.

As for the super trippy FMV ending, I read somewhere (can't recall the link, though) that there was a translation difference going to English from Japanese. In the Japanese version, during the final battle with Ultimecia,
she says something about destroying their memories, or taking their memories from them, or something like that. So, the fact that Squall can't recall Rinoa's face is because of Ultimecia...and probably the fact that he was the only one stuck in time because of his past loneliness and faltering in the belief in his friends.
