Yeah, that's basically what the story was about. It's been remade on GBA as 'Sword of Mana' (Shinyaku Seiken Densetsu)... -completely- remade, but the overall story remained the same. I'd say it's one of the handful games whose newer version turned out actually better than the original. Don't get me wrong there, I still like FFA.
Well, FF Adventure had nothing to do with the FF series at all. It was about the Mana Sword and the Mana Tree, like the rest of the Mana/Seiken games. I guess that's why they decided to re-create it as part of the Mana series instead of calling it 'FFA Advance' or something like that...
If you've played Legend of Mana or any of the old school Seikens and liked it, then by all means do buy Sword of Mana!
