Seeing as there are a lot of fan fiction writers and readers, I wanted to have a discussion with everyone about what makes a fanfic a hit or a potato. What makes some fanfics good while others sink like hammers.

Some of my personal credos are included in what Ozzallos from fanfiction.net wrote about in his page, concerning 14 rules of fanfiction failure. I strongly encourage everyone to give this a read as it is VERY helpful in making sure you don't write yet another potato.

Ozzallos' 14 Rules of Fanfiction Failure

The irony is I was shown this by someone who read my DMC fanfics and told me that I'd managed to avoid all those pitfalls before I'd even read this. It made me proud but it also made me think and wonder: Why do so many other writers fall right into them?

Of course, there's other issues why fanfiction can fail hard or succeed in being fun to read.

A big issue for me, since I use them a lot, is what you're doing with your original characters. I have a gigantic article about that thing that I plan to post some time, but the bottom line is, people just forget that fanfiction is not about OCs but about an established canon and creating Mary Sues. They make original characters more important to a fanfic than the fandom it's based upon.

And let's face it, Mary-Sues alone can utterly destroy a fanfic more thoroughly than fire destroyed the Hindenburg...
