Basically, did you like how you could swap your characters and everything whenever you wanted? And how you could switch the protagonist out of your party like in most other Final Fantasy's (exceptions being VI and VIII, inform me if there are others) the protagonist has to stay in the party the whole game?

Switching all the characters was a great idea - it meant like on X you could balance train all your party members the same instead of having your leader level 90 and the rest of your team about 70.

Yeah, I liked it. I can even say I dislike the fact that in some other FFs, you must keep the leader in the party. It is just so wrong. I want to choose my party leader myself!
For example, I really hated the fact you must keep Cloud in the party in FFVII.
I wanted to create some parties without Cloud...

And if the party is big, then I would like to have more than one leader.
My two "leaders" were Vaan and Balthier.

Another game in which you can switch them is FFX.

I liked the fact that you could switch out your characters at any time, even the "protagonist". First, I always ran with my Healers (Ashe & Penelo) to keep their MP up higher and to try and keep them away from too much danger. That was a huge help. Second, I got to level my characters up evenly rather than have one group be significantly higher than the other. The one thing that drove me nuts about earlier FF's was the fact that the main character would always end up being 10-20 levels higher then the rest of the group.

I like how if all your party is KO'd you can change your party instead of getting game over.

Yeah, that was a pretty good idea. I really liked it when you could swap the lead character out of your party. In the other FFs, you usually have to keep the lead in, so keeping them out was a nice change.

Yup, very good idea, not really having a "main character" was pretty nice for a change. Didnt have to play Vaan which was good - that guys lame - but they should have also made the change in cities and non encounter areas where u qould control the current party leader instead of Vaan.

yes i love the character system, how we were able to change the party whenever, and to to contain whoever we wanted. this feature was also very helpful when reiving members. this and combined with haste made reviving very simple. i never got the game over screen thanks to it. and its true in the other games the protaginist always ends up 10-20 levels higher. it made trainning the weaker characters easy. and allowed the player total control of the team's statergy.

I usually prefer other characters over the main guy, so it's great that you can switch things around. And it worked great in XII, like it did in X, too.

There isn't really 1 protagonist in XII, I mean you could consider Vann being the main cover boy but the story does not really revolve around him. In the same way that Locke isn't really the leading man in VI. Unlike most of the games where the story spins around Cloud,Squall,Zidane,Tidus, etc.

(Btw, did you know that Basch was originally set to be the main guy? But they ended up going with the more girly looking one, cause that sells more. At least in Japan it does..)

I liked the character system in FFXII. I liked how you could switch characters out fairly easy, and if they were KO'd, you didn't have to bring them back to life just to switch. As for being able to switch out the main character, I liked that you had that option, but I think that the protagonist should stay in the party unless he his KO'd.

Personally I was disappointed that the characters weren't separated into different classes, but I do enjoy the freedom I have in choosing who I want to use and how I want use them... I think they could have done better with some of the weapon types and the options you're given early on...

I liked the system for its gameplay applicability. It made the whole experience a lot more streamlined and yet still so challenging, since battles flowed so much more easily than random battles while difficult enemies required even quicker nerves than previous games.

I hated how the character system diluted the character develpment though. Since there are no set classes for the characters, i.e., characters have access to learn all spells/weapons/etc., there are no character-specific Ultimate Weapons, and there are no defining roles for the characters (e.g, one would have been a Tank, one a Healer, and so on), it takes away from the contribution of active gameplay into each character's own development in the plot.

In my belief, Basch or Ashe should have been the main protagonist.
