Hi, I have several FF games on PS1, but I came across this one and am having difficulty ID'ing exactly what version it is.

Pictures below:

The graphic on the disc is raised, almost like it has been printed on by a printer (making me think initially it was a fake/copy), but on the data side of the disc, on the inner ring, 'Final Fantasy VIII' is etched, showing it is an original.
I don't believe it is a EU or US version, maybe Japanese? (there are what appear to be some Japanese characters on the front of the disc), but then the rear insert is in English?!? And the disc graphic just seems very odd, it is very vibrant and all of the discs are identical.

A promo maybe?

I would be grateful for any ideas.

banjo.

Does look odd. Maybe it's a copy from one of those country's where buying only fake/copied/cheapo versions of the game is possible?

I have actually only just read what is on the insert, and it is more like a review of the game, not an actual description, making me think more it is a promo?
The graphic is very odd though, yes.

It kinda looks like a demo version to me, actually. The back of it, the third picture, also makes me think so, but if you've played it and it's the full game, I have no idea. It's definitely not the US version, because I have that. (I have the greatest hits one and the original one too, so it's neither of those, because they have silver discs.)

I'll google for a while and see what I get :gasp:

Tried them in a PS2, 'No Data', so chucked them in my PC:

FF8DISC1.IMG - IMG FILE - 620,728 KB
SLUS_008.92 - 92 FILE - 1,604 KB
SYSTEM - SpeedDial - 1 KB

FF8DISC2.IMG - IMG FILE - 587,276 KB
SLUS_009.08 - 08 FILE - 1,604 KB
SYSTEM - SpeedDial - 1 KB

FF8DISC3.IMG - IMG FILE - 611,446 KB
SLUS_009.09 - 09 FILE - 1,604 KB
SYSTEM - SpeedDial - 1KB

FF8DISC4.IMG - IMG FILE - 588,588 KB
SLUS_009.10 - 10 FILE - 1,604 KB
SYSTEM - SpeedDial - 1KB

When I put the first disc in there was no 'Autostart', so not a PC disc?

But then, each disc has a large image file, so could these be master copies?

I would say these were copies everytime normally, if it were not for the 'Final Fantasy' etching on the data side of the disc - and also on that side which I did not notice before is each disc is etched A, B, C, D which coincides with the disc numbering data above - copies would not have this etching on the rear.

Very confused!

They look like fakes to me.
Mainly due to the review on the back, My guess would be someone has put alot of effort into these to sell them as some form of promo or special copy.

Do they play on a non chipped PS1?
Can you gain access to a chipped PS1 and see if they play?

Also the print cuts off in the corner on the disc you showed us.

Don't have a chipped PS1, probably can't gain acces to one easily other than buying one off ebay.

Maybe it was a release candidate? Have you tried to play the game from begining to end and realized some minor differences? I'm guessing it is an RC which has passed if there is no differences or a free promo at some event give away.

It won't play on a UK PS2, or a PC. Not tried it on a chipped PS1/2 though.

Try downloading a PS1 emulator on the PC and run it.
IMG files are usually for such a use as far as I know.
I played it on the PC with a PS1 emulator as well (sorry SE, I have no way to get such an old game...) and my files are IMG.

Why was this moved to FF Misc when it's a question about VIII?
