Which do you think is the best battle system in FF series? FFIV, FFV, FFVII, FFX, ....? Well, tell me something.

Well up until FFX, they were all remotely similar. I quite liked the old school ATB systems, but I like the way FFX implemented the character swapping.

Best battle system was Final XII. More realistic that fighters would rush to attack and bow users would move towards the back, but stay within range. The system flowed nicely, the auto-settings made for easier management, yet the system still allowed for turn-based attacking so it wasn't all about stick skills like the FF VIII gunblade triggers. I hope SE continues along the same lines and just continues tweaking the system to make it better.

I do agree that switching in Final X was easier and made more sense. Why couldn't we add that element to Final XII's and just have a quick "trigger" method of switching party members in and out. Besides, if they do have to restrict us to a certain number of active characters, wouldn't it make sense to just keep a knocked out character on the ground where they were beaten and have a quick pop up or auto-selected character replace them?

VI. While all the characters could use magic they all had their own ability that made them unique. (Terra had morph, Sabin had blitz) It was always fun to switch the party around and see how well the new characters worked together.

I like IV's battle system too. You were allowed to use five characters, which is a plus. And you never got to choose your party (until the GBA version) so it offered a challenging gameplay since there were some characters you didn't know what to do with. (Edward for example) You also didn't always have the majority of your party being brute force. (There were times when you had three mages and two fighters to work with.

I liked X the best, becasue of the CTB, easily one of the best. Depending on what you did that turn, would affect when you went next. My second would have to be X-2, simply becasue, of all the motion. When they attack, they would move to a different spot, that was good, too bad it was a bad game though

Again, the same needs/wants are always repeated when battle systems are discussed. The ability to switch out characters, being able to integrate all characters into the party despite their skillset, a more realistic flow to the battle, etc... I sincerely hope our battle systems continue to evolve as our hardware continues to evolve. :)

Actually, all I liked about it is what I stated earlier, the CTB, depending on the move you use, it will effect the turn you go on later on. I couldn't care less about switicing people out or realism

My favorite is FFXII but I comment others too before commenting FFXII battle system.

FFII or VIII are the worst battle systems and IX has problems too. II battles tend to be too long because you spend a lot time wounding your characters and using magic so your stats go up, it was pretty annoying when I could sometimes use ten minutes in one battle many times.

VIII Junction system just simply sucks too, it makes battles too long and I hate lack of MP although I-III lacked it too but I´m fine with them.

IX was fine but it was too slow, trance-system was otherwise okay but not being able to use them when you wanted was bad. Characters switching during battle would have been very useful in this since each had their own unique abilities.

FFX is good but it makes game too easy. Sprehe grid is nice but towards end all characters are almost same.

FFXII is the best because it is easy to level up if let gambits do the work but if you want have challenge then you don´t have to use them. Also there is many different weapons and not just each character can use their own unique weapons ( although it is more logical) . Many forgotten FF-weapons like axes made return and new like hand bombs. Captainbill47 pretty much said everything about this awesome battle system.

FFX for me. It has just the right amount of the classic ATB elements from the older games, while providing enough innovation to make itself distinguishable.

I like classic ATB... FFXII's just sucks...

It's like... 'Hey, how about you continue to beat the living crap outta me while I'm strategizing? kthxbai!'

Yes, a turn-based system takes more time, but it helps you actually care about the strategy of the thing... FFXII was just a menu-based hack-&-slash where you just sit back until the fight is over... If they want real time battle systems, they should lose the damn menu...

Although strategy-based systems can be slow to the point of frustration. The first time I played FF Tactics, I wanted to pull my hair out. ATB is practically hack n slash in comparison.

I know... So what I'm saying is, if turn-based strategy is too slow, and menu-based automated hack-and-slash is too devaluing to the gameplay, I prefer ATB as sort of a mid-point between the two extremes.

I liked the battle system in FFX the most, yes I thought it was a lot easier compared to the others ones, but I didn't find it an easy game to begin with.

I like the battle systems in FFVII FFX and FFXII the most, VII is my favourite ATB system, X tried something new that i found a refreshing change compared to other RPGs, and a nice way to be introduced to the series (X was my first game) and FFXII was showing how random battles are no longer needed in future FF games ^_^

I liked the battle system in X best, altho I like the convienience of XII it was too fast paced for me lol, I think I'm getting old and my reflexes are slowing down abit....I find myself having to pause sometimes while I get my brain in gear....

but yeah, before my brain died, I liked X best. Being able to swap your chars mid battle was a life safer & I liked the fact that you could plan out your attacks with the thingy on the right hand side of the screen (brain not working again)

My favourite Battle sytem is the ATB, I just love the awesomeness of the bars, but in a very close second is FFX's CTB. I loved how there was instant swapping with no turn loss, it was just awesome.

I agree with Aerith, VII, X and XII had the best battle systems.

VII was the best ATB because you felt you were in control of so many aspects of it- there was a lot of choice with the command materia as well as your standard magics and summons, and the Limits were the most controlled and easy to use out of all the games. The only condition you had to contend with was which level your Limit was at, other than that you just give your characters Hyper and the Limits were soon ready. It was pretty awesome how the time bar went up super-fast when a character's Limit came up!! In general, it was just straightforward and great to use. I'm having trouble getting to grips with the FFVIII system, it seems to be all about draw and GF, draw and GF, no tactics and the battles are too drawn out (pardon the pun!). FFIX was Ok, but I didn't like losing control of the Limits and the bgi gaps between giving a command and seeing it carried out.

X was also my first FF, and the CTB system suited me down to the ground. Without the time bars there was valuable thinking time, especially knowing how tactical X could sometimes be, and switching characters without losing a turn was of course a plus. Limits were great, choosing which factor determines how the Limit comes up, be it through attacking, getting hit or healing, that was a nice twist. And it was interesting that you had to do certain things to make the attacks more powerful, like the Slots and Auron's button sequences. Though Lulu's Fury annoyed me because I never got more than 8 spins:dry:

XII was so so different, and the live feel of the battle was great and added to the realism. The only criticism I would have is that a lot of the XII battles required little or no tactics, like someone said earlier you could sail through the game with a hack and slash attitude. Other than that, sweet!!

i really liked the battle system in XII too. once u got the hang of the gambits it waz very useful because u could decide whether or not to fite and what ur characters did and everything

I thought XII's was great, It made the game quicker and often i could walk away and come back and my party had killed some monsters. Saying that, I found X to be the most enjoyable, It made me really think and stratagise the moves when fighting the Dark Aeons and Nemesis, It's slower then most FF but is great.

Though I set myself up for ostracization, I proclaim FF Tactics the possesor of the greatest battle system. True, the battles took more time, but (with the exception of XII) it gave the most realistic sense of range, and the overall greatest sense of strategic formation. There is greater variation avaiable in how you fight your battles (i.e. surrounding your enemies or blitzing through them).
