Has anyone here ever beaten it? Or have you know anyone who has? I only know one guy who has. A man that Busta and I are both close with, Tempest, has beaten the game. It took him a year.

And yes, the game does have a final boss battle. His name is the Shadow Lord and he is the final boss to the main game. Yes there are expansions because after you beat him you just go back into the world and continue playing apparently but he's still the final boss for the game. Just as Yu Yevon is for FFX even though there are many monsters that are stronger...

You can't really beat the game as there is always add ons like new jobs, missions, all the AF's and quests/events during each time of the year and with a 4th expansion on the way.

EDIT: Also, I have heard so far that no one has beating Absolute Virtue.

A final boss for an MMORPG? I never played FFXI but I find that to be odd. I wouldn't except to be a 'final boss', wouldn't Square just add more content? Once a group kills the most power boss they add more dungeons to keep their players paying...

You cant beat it, it isnt possible
you can finish any of the mission story lines, but that doesnt equal beating the game.
If you ever were able to complete every single thing possible (which is near impossible to do anytime soon), theres big updates every few months adding new content.

Also Shadow Lord was probably the closest thing to a final boss waaay back in the day, but now he's just a mid boss at the half way point of completing the Bastok/San doria/Windurst missions. Compared to Rize of the Zilart, Chains of Promathia and Treasures of Aht Urghan the rank missions are just the beginner set.

We're talking about the main game, not the expansion pack. To the main game, as was stated in the first post.

Even if you were just talking about "the main game" which really makes no sense.

Bastok Mission 1-1: The Zeruhn Report
Bastok Mission 1-2: A Geological Survey
Bastok Mission 1-3: Fetichism
Bastok Mission 2-1: The Crystal Line
Bastok Mission 2-2: Wading Beasts
Bastok Mission 2-3: The Emissary
Bastok Mission 3-1: The Four Musketeers
Bastok Mission 3-2: To the Forsaken Mines
Bastok Mission 3-3: Jeuno
Bastok Mission 4-1: Magicite
Bastok Mission 5-1: Darkness Rising
Bastok Mission 5-2: Xarcabard, Land of Truths (this is Shadow Lord)
Bastok Mission 6-1: Return of the Talekeeper
Bastok Mission 6-2: The Pirate's Cove
Bastok Mission 7-1: The Final Image
Bastok Mission 7-2: On My Way
Bastok Mission 8-1: The Chains That Bind Us
Bastok Mission 8-2: Enter The Talekeeper
Bastok Mission 9-1: The Salt of the Earth
Bastok Mission 9-2: Where Two Paths Converge (This is "The Final Boss" of rank missions. Who it is depends on your starting city.)

I got to level 49 Paladin and quit :/
I think i just stopped going because of boredom...
and there was some bother with my linkshell with people kicking and we had to make new ones.
I got to the mission before the Shadow Lord and beat 2 Promys :/ with some ridiculously huge play time.

All I can say is : I hate ninjas.

lol I wish I could've played through it more. When I played I had a ton of different troubles. Bad computer, bad internet connection, and low patience for leveling. I hated fighting sheep and lizards... and losing. But there's never been any other game that I've felt more immersed in than that one. It was like being an actual adventurer. I had a girlfriend who played and a really good friend named Frankie who played. And the three of us would go out and level for a while and then just find some picturesque location to hang out, talk about the day, and swap loot.

Had you even completed every mission, you still wouldn't beat the game. The game does not end when you beat the last mission. Unlike the offline games, the game continues after you beat the final boss.

Alright, I'm closing my own topic here since you people are clearly incapable of reading what I wrote in my original post. It seems like people only seem to come in here and state the obvious.
