Awkward Car Rides

This happens to me quite often... I normally turn on music, but that leads to even more awkwardness, and then i ask a question like 'how was your day?' and i normally get a really quiet answer. Always happens. The only things that seem to work to prevent awkward car rides are debates, especially on political subjects. Really that's the only thing that has worked for me.
 
The 2 times my boyfriend gave me lifts when we werent dating lol. We both really liked each other, so the rides were very quiet and featured random questions like weather and work lol.
 
almost every ride with my dad is akward
specially when someone calls my cell
he starts asking all sorts of questions

I've had one of those rides before. I was getting dropped off by the birthday boy's mother after the party, but I really didn't know her that well, and I had no idea how to approach her in any kind of conversation, so I just looked out the window for about 20 minutes, occasionally answering the question about school, etc. It was very awkward.
