I can't find this posted anywhere, so please forgive me if someone has already posted this.
The Deathbringer sword has an attack value of 90 and won't show up in any shops until you are nearly finished with the game.
BUT, there is a way to get that sword very, very early on. I accomplished it at lvl 20 on my last playthrough. However, it is kind of difficult to do at lower levels.
First of all, you must be past the Tomb of Raithwall, and the downing of the Leviathan which directly follows.
You must also have two hunts completed. 1. Flower Cactus 2. Nidhogg.
When you are done with all of that, go back to the petitioner that gave you the Cactus hunt. He will ask you to take the flower to his wife, who is at their home in a location on the eastern edge of the Estersand 2 screens up from that petitioner. She will then give you a couple of more things to do I can list them all if you like, but it's fairly easy to do.
Once you have completed her little sidequest, you will receive a key to get back in under the Barheim passage. The passage entrance is roughly south of her location. You'll see it.
Use the key to get back in and you'll recognize immediately where you are. Go down the hill and back onto the tracks. Just follow the tracks until you come back upon the next blue save crystal. But before you save, equip everyone's gambits with "nearest foe" "steal".
Now, save your game, and head back out the way you came in. If you remember from your first trip through Barheim, the huge gate to your right was closed. It is now open. Go through it and take a look at your mini-map. There are two exits out of here. One to the left, and one to the right. Take the exit on the left and prepare to hit R2 because you DO NOT want to mess with any of the mobs in this area. At level 20, they'll nearly one-hit you.
Equip either a bangle or use Libra because there's a trap up ahead. Go around that trap and enter the rocky terrain to the left of the tracks. Flee past the frogs and you'll soon see an Adamantite. Obviously, you don't want to take that one on either, so flee past him as well.
Make your way back onto the tracks and a few steps down you'll see a medium sized rock by the wall. But you'll also see another one of those frogs. Disregard it. We're looking for two chests or "vases" right on the other side of that medium sized rock. One will be greyish blue, that's a treasure. The other will be bright silver. THAT is the bad boy you want to show up.
It's a rare mimic called Ithion (sp?). He won't be there every time you try so if he's not there, simply quit to main screen and load up your last save from that blue crystal. Repeat the steps above until that bright silver chest shows up.
Now, we get into the actual tactics of this beauty.
You don't want to try and steal from him here with the other mobs around so you're going to flee immediately back to just before you came in. Hopefully, Ithion will follow you all the way there and not turn back. He usually does follow you all the way.
This will get rid of any other mobs that had you in their sights.
Now, to start stealing. This guy hits HARD, and I'm talking around 700 hp or so. His attack is 90. But here's the beauty. If someone dies, replace them immediately. When you are down to only two chars alive, exit immediately to the next area and raise or use phoenix downs to gain the party's health back.
When it's safe, go back through to where Ithion was and he'll still be there. He won't move unless you go another screen away. It may take a while, but eventually you WILL steal the only item he has. The Deathbringer sword.
If you want to repeat this whole thing to steal another one, you can. Just save it at that same blue crystal, and repeat the steps above.
In a little under 2 hours, I'd stolen 5 and equipped 2, and the other 3 sold for 8,000 each.
