With the majority of the films coming out of Hollywood these days being mediocre, or just plain bad, i have come to appreciate the world of Asian cinema in the past couple of years. I was first recomended to watch Zatoichi, a recent remake of an age long film franchise in Japan, about a blind ronin samurai master, directed and starring Takesh Kitano, an action film legend in Japan.

And what a film it was, quirky Japanese humour, action sequences that broke away from the norm, if you havent seen it, check it out, it will change your idea of a typical action film.

After that i went on to see films like Battle Royale, Old Boy, Ichi The Killer, Save The Green Planet, Visitor Q.....and others

Discuss your Asian movie experiences, faves and worsts.....and so on

Battle Royale 1 & 2, The Grudge, Wishing Stairs, A Bittersweet Life, Soalin Soccrer and Old Boy are really the only ones Ive seen.

There are many out there I still need to see, Lady Vengence being at the top of the list!

I got my copy, then had serious Grudge nightmares and had to get rid of it.
I felt better afterwards lol. I refuse to watch the American versions of anything.

Nice, i need to see the Japanese version of the ring aswell, i bet those Grudge nightmares were pretty harcore:P

I usually watch something like Pokemon after a horror film.....:D or the laughable US version of the same film....to get myself in a better mood...:P

The Magnificent Seven is a good Western remake of an Asian film (ditto A Fistful of Dollars) ;)

I agree about Zatoichi, it's very good and the ending sequence is one of my favourites in any film. It's very funny in places too.

The film Chungking Express is one of my favourite films ever, I recommend that to everyone. I really need to see more stuff by Wong-Kar Wai.

Cool, do you mean the remake of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai?
I think the most disturbing Asian film that i saw was Visitor Q, OMFG don't watch it, it will mess you up:P, its pretty clever though, if you understand it...

Yeah the two films are remakes of The Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, and they're both great. Maybe remakes only got crap in recent years XD

I love foreign cinema. I've been into a lot of French, German, and Asian. But this is an Asia Cinema thread...soo.

To comment on the ones mentioned above:
Magnicent Seven - Awesome. One of my favorite westerns and its probably because it's very closely tied to Seven Samurai.
Zatoichi - Blind samurai = awesome
Battle Royale - The book was good so I was intrigued by the idea of a film based on it. Didn't disappoint. HOWEVER, Battle Royale 2 was crap.
Old Boy - Forget any movie that you know that has a good twist in it. this movie has the BEST twist ever and will leave you going....WTF? The 2D battle scene was pretty cool too.
Ichi the Killer - Not his best movie, but still good. The actor's name escapes me right now. It converted some of my friends to Japanese cinema so its worth watching.
Save The Green Planet - I've never heard of it, but I will look it up. ^__^
Visitor Q - Any of Takeshi Miike's films are worth watching for the shock value alone.
Shaolin Soccer - One of the funniest sport comedies ever.
Chungking Express - Really good. Wong Kar Wai knows how to create believable characters and I love his films. Days of Being Wild, In the Mood For love, and 2046 is a trilogy worth watching if you like dialog and character.

-sigh- that was more than I thought. I don't really watch the asian horror movies anymore because they have kind of hit a rut in creativity. Its pretty much always a little girl with long hair who is the problem. lol

My recommendations:
All About Lily Chou Chou - Watch it NOW. It's one of my favorite films ever. Do it. Its about a 14 yr olds, a message board, and the trials and tribulations of getting through school.
Love Letter -Same director as ^^. Interesting tale about love, death, and moving on.
Last Life In the Universe - Has a pretty cool drug-induced sequence. But the rest of the movie is good too.

Cool, i'll make sure to check those out:D

I also forgot to metion Takashi Miike'e Audition, i haven't seen it yet, but i heard its good....

Oh and Battle Royale 2 did ruin it for me....

My boyfriend has Old Boy. I'm too much of a wuss to see it. I don't want to see the gross parts!

I know that Asians are the best at making horror movie.

Couple of movies I recommend....

Survive Style 5 - Thanks to my best friend who showed me the movie. ;D It's an awesome movie. I recommend downloading or buying the movie! Unique plot and it's a comedy, drama, and action movie. The move has some great moments.

Kamikaze girls - It's girly girly movie. It was a cute movie. Movie is basically about two girls that are opposite that become friends. The main character is into Gothic Lolita and Rococo fashion. The other main girl is a rebel, biker, gang member. I actually brought this movie from Best buy.

Audition is terrific, especially the way the film slowly changes tone. The first half is almost like a romance and is even comedic in the scene where they interview the women. Then before you know it it's gotten really sinister and the finale had me almost hiding behind the sofa XD - "kiri kiri kiri kiri" as they say...

Even funnier was my Dad one day putting it on and not knowing what it was about. He looked horrified that evening when I came home!

My parents wouldn't even know what was going on in that film if they put it in. They hate having to read movies. So they would have taken it out as soon as they started speaking their alien language.

Hahaha, so you're pretty much forfeiting all chances of ever converting them to foreign cinema.

Oh, has anyone here seen Suicide Club?

So wanna see Survive Style 5. Ive heard good things about, as well as Audition. Ive been told to watch The Eye also lol. My friend said its freaky.

Im not sure, remember my friend pointing at it in HMV, telling me to watch it. So I may have an Asian/anime weekend.

Yea, after a weird movie like that, you need a palette cleanser. Its just not good to watch something like that and have it linger in your head.
