If your talking about FF12 then depends if you want a better chance to get combo hits or not.
Lighter armor with say a pole or katana will have a better chance of getting combos then if you where wearing heavy armor. They also have alot of +HP on them.
Heavy armors used to add to your defense rating. Which will help you greatly facing hard hitting monsters. They also add to strength and atk power.
For the first quarter of the game, Light Armour is recommended; defense isn't quite as essential as it is later on in the game. However, Heavy Armour wouldn't go amiss, if you tend to use a tank to absorb the damage taken.
I advise equipping Light Armour for the head, and Heavy Armour for the body. Once your level reaches the 55 stage, I suggest you start using Mystic Armour for the head; in particular, the Circlet. Even though you can obtain a maximum of two circlets throughout the game, its Magick Defense is unrivaled, as is its Magic boost; which is optimum for characters using the Masamune.
For the majority of the game, a mixture of both Light and Heavy is advisable, if you want a balance between defense, magick defense, strength and HP. People tend to stray from using Mystic Armour, due to the fact that magic is impotent in this FF. But just remember, your magic stat affects other abilities other than magic itself; Katanas rely on your magic stat (along wth others) to deal damage.
