After 1 hour, not too impressed

After downloading the 14 day free trial, setup an account, waiting for 3.5 hours to finish huge update, etc. I have started the game and I'm already getting turned off by the completely clunky controls/interface/everything. It took me about 10 minutes to figure out what the "main menu" was and how to activate it. And then, I did some Fed-Ex quest in Bastok that took me almost an hour to do due to long travel time. Then I walked outside, got myself equipped, and fought some bats and worms. Of course, to no surprise, the combat looks similar to WoW. Except more awkward to control. Then they drop a chest and I have to click through 3 different windows for each and every item I want to loot off of them (ARRGH!)

Overall, I'm not too impressed. If there were hotkeys and things I don't already know about I might be able to work around it. And if the game were to pick up the pace from the beginning, then yeah.

But it looks to me like the storyline aspect of FF11 is just extra (and easily forgettable) and the game, itself, doesn't have ANYTHING on WoW (a game I played for about 3 months TOTAL before I stopped playing altogether) And it doesn't look like its going to be any easier to solo in FF11 than in WoW.

Am I right?

Trust me when I say, FFXI Online is a HELL of a lot easier on Xbox 360 than it is PC -__- It's bloody annoying on the PC where you often had lag and performance issues but on the Xbox it is so much smoother and easier to play.

Agree with you about the "not impressed" part.
I worked so hard to make it work (had a few problems with the Internet at that time), but in the end managed to make it work.

My reasons to not like the game are different than yours though.
I actually found the menu and all quite comfortable.
But what I hated was:

1) The battle system feels too repetitive and got boring very fast
2) The customizing is system is... hardly there...
3) The soundtrack isn't impressive and sometimes was annoying
4) It is Fu**ing impossible to flee from enemies!!! A stupid goblin hit me with his tiny knife even from a distance of 10 meters or more. WTF?!?!?!?!?

The only two things which I admit were good are:
1) Interesting maps
2) A lot of side quests

Overall, it is the only FF I hate and I am not into MMOs anyway.
So I just wasted my time (played for something like 15 hours)

The one positive thing I will say about it is that I like the fashion-show/pole-dancer music that plays when you select a female human, elf, or mithra from the create-character screen.

To tell the truth I only played Final Fantasy XI for a week or so. I did not like it that much. Hopefully Final Fantasy XIV will be much better! XI was fun but only for a limited amount of time.

Played FFXI for 5 years and its the best MMO i ever tried, played Everquest, LineageII, WoW, tested Aion but not enough to tell my impressions more than felt like a WoW.

I must admit FFXI has a slow start compared to WoW or Aion that is f***ing ez to lvl up, buy gear etc. but it worths the hard work after 30s when ur not killed very fast. About the game play i liked it alot, felt familiar w/ maps and npcs pretty fast, did some quests the 1st 10 lvls then learnt bout pt/camps/chains and never stop lvling but to farm and buy new gear.

The traveling through areas is very slow under lvl 20 but u really dont need to move far at those levels, then u get a chocobo license and the chicks riding lets u move faster, on higher lvls u have more options and moving from 1 area to another is pretty fast, more than other actual games.

If u espect FFXIV being more freindly than FFXI is for starters, well, maybe it will be but not alot more friendly for u to like it, doubt FFXIV will turn a WoW,AoC,Aion etc.

The gobling hiting u from 10 meters disctance while u try to flee bores us all and i admit its something bad in this game hope SE fixs that in FFXIV. The way FFXI seems to be made makes u feel u fight or die, no flee allowed cuz while u try to run away u will aggro/link other mobs and get killer faster...

The strong point of this game is its community but in a few days of gaming u prolly wont notice that.

Ik u all ppl love FF games cuz gameplay, story, vids etc but we are few ppl compared to those who play simulators, racing, fighting etc. and if u try to em to like FF games, well, good luck w/ that cuz they will list alot of reason they would hate FF games. Its the same w/ MMOs, u may espect them at some point similar and just to find ez who is better but u may look/play further and see what they really have for u.

I found that alot of ppl that love offline RPGs feel uncomfortable playing online games, y? may ur psychiatrist will tell u. Mostly ppl in WoW/Aion/AoC wouldnt play FF games never. I would love to have enough time to play all FFs games (more than the 3 i beat) and FFXI (and later FFXIV) but RL keeps me bussy enough for just 1 game and my choice is FFXI.

Now even if i tell u FFXI is a kick ass game i wont recommend u or any1 to start it now, the game is long and w/ FFXIV starting next year u wont accomplish neither 10% of what the game offers u. So just wait for FFXIV or play WoW/Aion/AoC that i wouldnt recommend em to nobody for a long time game, ud get bored of em in 1 year top.

FFXI Trail was the most complicated download ever and when i finally did download it and started playing i was dissapointed straight away the controls are awful and wasn't to impressed with the dull surroundings either i got so far and decided enough was enough
