Aeris: what's her connection to mother?

Ok so my friend and I were having an argument while we were watching advent children. he seems to think that Aries is Jenova and i tell him he's a bloody idiot.

the game states that she is the last ancient and that jenova was never an ancient. that alone should be enough to convince him but he's all like "say what you want..." he also then put to me why then do both cloud and kadaj(spell check?) call her mother when loz and yazoo and kadaj refer to jenova as mother. and that stumpped me because i didn't have an answer all i can tell him is that aries is the last ancient and that jenova was never an ancient and it's driving me crazy

First of all, it's Aerith or Aeris. C:
Second of all, Nomura(writer/director/creator) says she's like a mother to the whole planet. So, when Kadaj was returning to the planet(or whatever) he felt a maternal essence from Aerith and just assumed it was HIS mother.

I'm still not sure why Cloud and Zack call her "mother", though. One theory is that Cloud was unconscious and didn't know who or what was going on.

I believe it's because she has that maternal presence that they believe they're laying unconscious in bed. It could also be that her voice is so soothing that they think it's their mother talking to them or trying to wake them up.

Zack was unconcious and he wanted to help Angeal so badly that he was just dreaming that his mother was talking to him, that is all. It is pretty common for everyone that when stumped in a dilemma or trouble, we tend to look for our mother for guidance or reassurance.
