I know that this would present some problems as far as voice work, naming names and all,but do you like it when you're able to name your characters?Or just main character, ala DQVIII?And what would you pick for your partys names?Me,I always use Mordecai first, followed by Lucas and Simon.Every RPG I've ever played where I could name my own, those were my top 3.Dunno why, just is.Comment!

I like it just fine, although I still prefer using the characters' default names. The reason is because when I am using a strategy guide and they refer someone's name, I want to be able to recognize the character immediately, ya' know what I mean? ^_^

On the first few play throughs, I keep their original names. But sometimes on my fourth or fifth play through, it's fun to give them stupid names. Especially for VII.

I think for voiceovers having the ability to change names would create a waste of space and processing time to calculate the new names.

Having said that having more naming choices in FFVIII or IX would have been nice

It depends. I like it if you make your character in the game (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1&2) but if you don't make yourself, then I like their default names. However I would like for some newer games to have name choices to pick when you meet the character. The only older game I really used the rename system was Chrono Chross because that game had way to many characters you can pick from.

Honestly, no. Although I love doing it in other games, I think it would detrack from the game. In Final Fantasy X they allowed you to rename the main character and simply just never said his name in the audio clips. I liked that style of doing it... but in Final Fantasy XII the names were such a large part of the game (Basch fon Ronsenburg) that I think it would have really killed the feel of the game if you could have replaced those names with personalized ones.

how can names be a large part of a game?

Think about it - in a FF game which uses voices, do you honestly think that the creators would spend all their time putting in alternative audio input? Hell no. It would be stupid to do so. The only way you could work round it, by letting people rename characters, is by not mentioning main characters in any FMV/cutscene, and that would be also make it hard to make a decent cutscene/FMV if characters want to talk to each other in such a scene.

Yeah. Baten Kaitos (i think i mis-spelled it) for the cube did the same thing. You only got to name the main character, and nobody said his name throughout the whole game that i remember. Im not sure what happens if you dont change his name, ill have to test that.
Its a really good idea, just making the game leave out the characters names that have been changed in a cutscene.

It's not an idea that I would agree with though personally :P

He just explained it!
Balthier's real name tied him to his father in the game, and also keyed him in on what he used to do as a profession before he became a sky pirate. Ashe was given her name through the royal family line; think back to FFX. Yuna was named after...? Yunalesca. Names do play a big part in the game and it's connections sometimes.

o_O I hope you're not addressing me there..as it's awfully confusing.

All you guys are right.....it's better to have a set story with set characters, makes backgrounds more precise.I guess I started a thread with a dumb question!

i wont like to change the names its such a pathatic thing i prefer the names to be set from the start even if it is a sissy name
