Square Enix shouldn't keep making spin offs and sequels. Remakes are fine as long as they stick to the original plot.
The idea of Lulu's background story is pretty neat. Laguna's past as a Final Fantasy VIII prequel doesn't seem that bad either.... The whole prequel thing just might kill the original plot. This is Square Enix, not Square soft. These spin offs and sequels aren't being made by Hironobu Sakaguchi. Square Enix can do whatever the hell they want with the Final Fantasy franchise and they have.
Look at Crisis Core, they added quite a few characters that might have impacted the original plot. I'm positive if FFVII gets remade Genesis and these new characters will be mentioned.
