I'm doing fine in chapter 12, even though I only did like the first 4 mark missions and no grinding whatsoever. Most of my weapons are still tier 1 as well. The battles later in the game take a bit longer if you don't grind, but seeing how grinding takes up a crapload of time in and of itself....
