Nothing. It set the foundation for the rest of the series.
It's very simplistic, which is awesome. The original had its bugs, yeah, but who cares? It wasn't gonna be perfect back in the late 80s (or is it early 90s?).
I get a lot of guff for this, but I can't stand this game, and honestly, I don't think it needed to be made. I thought X's ending was decent enough, and could leave enough to the imagination.
The job system was unique, but tiresome, and the characters weren't interesting. The story didn't have...
The first playthrough was a tad over 40 hours; didn't do much for side quests and whatnot. Just wanted to experience the story.
On the subsequent playthroughs, though, I was pushing 150 to 170 hours. Took my sweet time, and tried everything. The hunts took a nice bit of time.
