My guess is that the OP didn't investigate the northern barrier before try to jump into Midgar. If he has fought Ultima Weapon then it's either of those two cases cause I think that Ultima only shows up after Diamond Weapon comes out.

I don't see why anyone would want to change a Pumice and a Hammer for a Pumice Piece. I guess the only reason is you have two pumice and no pieces and want that item.

I'd have to say Bahamut cause he is non-elemental and appears in most of the games. The others, Ifrit, Shiva, Leviathan and all elementals are only more powerful IF you are fighting someone weak to that element. Bahamut seems to be powerful no matter what defense or weakness is.
