I disagree, it appears to be a simple loosely connected reference to VII, I doubt there is substantial references to group the worlds together.

The only thing holding the series together, is the title "Final Fantasy" Granted, certain references are made throughout some games, different characters with the same names appear throughout the series (Cid, Biggs, Wedge) but there is very little correlation story-wise and no overlapping...
