I would heavily recommend the first 'The Dark Tower' book, a bit slow for your taste probably but the series as a whole has no equal. They are my favourite books, so let that colour your decision one way or another

That is indeed the place, that is actually one major annoyance I have with the game. This has happened too regularly in areas, and I've had to reload to make all the enemies appear
