well i just rented final fantasy 13 and didnt get the story but liked the graphics on it and the cut scenes but if i want to understand the story which final fantasy game should i get for i dont have to get the 1st final fantasy?

None of the Final Fantasy games in the main numbered series have anything to do with each other story-wise. Unless I'm ill-informed, XIII should contain a coherent story in and of itself, and playing the other games won't make XIII's story any easier to understand.

And this is just my speculation, but I doubt that you were able to finish off the game in the duration of your rental. I imagine that the story develops and reveals itself as you continue to progress, so my best guess would be to give that a shot first. But I understand that, being new to the series, you'd want to be sure that you aren't just missing out on something that you should've played beforehand.

Well, what I was saying is that none of the previous games have anything to do with Final Fantasy 13. If you have questions about 13's story, none of the previous games will answer them for you. Just finish 13 and stuff should be explained.
