I think Riku needs a bit more time without love... well, no. Everyone needs love, but not everyone needs more than friendship love. I think Riku needs his friends to support him, but he doesn't need Kairi or anyone else as his actual love. *cough B is his actual love, it's canon cough*

Plus (I think I've said this), to me he would have a lusty relationship. Really. He's always got the darkness in him, which makes him mature. A lustful, dark and mature isn't good for Kairi at least.

Riku needs love know that darkness broke up with him 
Love would further his character personality and make him a more likable person. But then again, maybe he would lose his coolness and become like sora, which would be a nightmare

The best way to make an audience crave your attention is by not being there too much. I think square-enix absolutely nailed that with Riku. Have him appear when it looked like nothing exciting was gonna happen for a while, then keep you excited with the idea of facing him soon.
