Need some help with Dark Elf Battle.. Game resets, instead of second sequence..

Hey, I know when you first enter the magnetic cave and get to the Dark elf in the Earth Crystal room, you are supposed to lose the first fight....

Well, that happens pretty quick with him doing 9999 damage every half a second...

Anyway, when that is all said and done, it says my party has been defeated and resets the game.

I am playing the Hard version, maybe thats why?
