PS3 price drop.

I wanted a PS3 to sit next to my 360. But I just couldn't afford it when it came out. I can afford it now with the price cut, but theres a catch... I won't be able to play my old PS2 games on the new PS3 version because Sony took away BC in order to make the console cheaper for consumers.

That my friends is a dealbreaker.

I thought BC in the PS2 was awesome. Microsoft jumped on the idea with the 360 but has been rather clumsy handling the issue. Nintendo also jumped on the issue and are reaching far back in time to their original NES games, which is awesome.

Bad Sony.. bad. I want my BC now!

Will this move affect your choice when it comes to buying a PS3? It certainly will affect mine as I dont want to keep my old PS2 as I have enough consoles around the house.

Not in any other way than I have to buy the older version when I first buy one. And there are still many of that one around here. (It's not only BC that is gone, also some ports are left out)
 
Well, the model you're talking about isn't the one that got the price cut. They've introduced a new 40GB "budget model", as I like to call it. It has zero BC, two less USB ports and a few other odd and end things missing that the more expensive models still have.

Sony is still producing the 80GB model, which will still have hardware BC, the extra USB ports, etc. This model used to be $599, but in a press release just this week Sony lowered the price to $499.

So, unfortunately, if you want BC, you have to buy the more expensive 80GB model.

I do, however, feel strongly that Sony should have kept both models with BC, and just had different price points with different sizes of hard drives. Possibly even give the 80GB model more features, but not take away anything that the previous models had, like they did with BC.

I don't yet have a PS3 either, but now I will have to get the 80GB model, because I really want BC functonality.

Im not getting aPS3. I want to, but I dont see the point. Its not imprssed me as much as the 360 and I think my money will be better spent on a 360 also. Plus I love my PS1 and 2 consoles and games, so Im sticking with them.
 
I knew about the price drop and the new 40 gb version....but didn't know that they removed other features as well. That's just stupid. As far as I know, the European consoles will only have downloadable BC much like the 360, but if the new 40gb version doesn't even have that option, what;s the point in it? I noticed that the 40gb PS3 was £300 here in UK. The Elite 360 is also £300 so for the same price, you're getting 80gb extra storage with the 360 AND BC too. Not having BC has really let Sony down in my eyes since they were the ones who started it all with the PS2 playing PS1 games. I just hope the change doesn't put them further behind the Wii & 360. What's more annoying is that us UK gamers HAVE to pay MORE for a console than in US. Someone said the 80gb PS3 was now $500? That's roughly £250 but in actual fact, as the 80 gb version hasn't been released here yet, even the 60gb PS3 is £350 (without any games), so as you can see, we Europeans get ripped off. Would you pay roughly $700 for a 60gb PS3?
 
That's funny coz the 60gb PS3 is $499 or $599 here in the U.S. Can't remember which exactly. All I know is that when I do eventually get a PS3, I'm looking to buy the 60gig solely based on it's backwards compatibility. I certainly would like to keep playing my PS1 games and not have to worry about console clutter around my TV. I already have an NES, an SNES, an N64, and a PS2 hooked up to my TV.
 
I've been waiting to get a PS3 and even tried to save up before it came out. Needless to say I'm still PS3 less. I will never be able to afford a PS3 unless I win the lottery, or unless it drops down to $200 or if I can get it cheap from a friend who doesn't want one (who the heck wouldn't want a PS3 anyway?)
 
It's unfortunate the prices are always climbing with newer and newer game consoles. It has become far too pricey for me. I thought $200 was enough for the PS2, but now we're climbing to the half-grand range. I guess better graphics and newer games is reserved for the rich only.
 
Apparently I read somewhere, taking away the backwards compatibility in the 40GB model doesn't make producing the PS3 any cheaper. Their only reason for taking it away is for normal consumers to spend more money on playing PS3 games, rather than continue playing PS2 ones.

And as been mentioned - Britain's just a God damn goldmine for Sony, ain't it? We're being ripped off, and just because we're desperate, we're giving them our money.
 
Yes, this issue will effect me when buying a PS3. I would really like backwards compatibility on the PS3. My main concern is my PS2 dying out on me. My PS1 still runs well but PS2 has been known to die out, and have tend to have DVD issues. I just want to make sure my PS3 is compatible with PS2.

Bahhh, oh well. =/ I guess I'll have to get the 80gig model.

That is a problem I have with my PS2 as well. It's been starting to die out on me, like it won't play dvds anymore, it only plays some PS1 games and I'm afraid that it's going to stop playing my PS2 games. With PS3 I want it to play all three plus PS3 games. Even though PS3 is that expensive, I want to be able to play the original PS and PS2 games, otherwise I'll buy another PS2.
 
On the whole subject of buying a ps3 I'm gonna wait until XIII hits the states. Though I want to play lots of the games coming out for the ps3 thesedays I don't have the constant burning need to buy any of them. XIII will be a little different. I'm hoping that by the time XIII comes out here the bc version will be down to 400 of 300 $ though kowing Sony they might just keep the price up until after XIII
 
I'm hoping to get a PS3 just after Christmas when Metal Gear Solid 4 is released (hopefully) and that's the only reason I want a PS3 at the moment. Other games I can get for 360 anyway. And I have had problems with my PS2 in the past....and now with my replacement one too. My first one just stopped playing specific discs (either old standard blue tinted and PS1 discs, or it didn't play dvd anymore) but now my replacement PS2 is starting to die out on me. Sometimes it wont read discs and sometimes it will. It also stutters quite a lot and I know it's nothing to do with the discs as I have checked them with my girlfriend's PS2 AND for dvds on the 360. I'm starting to be afraid to use my PS2 in case it finally dies out on me and I'll have to buy a new one. Admittedly I still have one of the normal PS2, if I have to, I'll buy a Slim PS2.

I had that problem with my PS1 the games started to jump, thus far my PS2 has been OK but if I was to get a PS3 I would look to get rid of my PS2 and it needs to have BC.
