is it just me that misses the world map/overworld that you could walk around on and explore and fly airships and sail boats on? i miss it because it made the game more challenging when you had to find places that were kinda hidden, and made the game less of a straight line. also it always had the best places to level up. thoughts?

I remember a thread exactly like this, but this could be DejaVu.

I'm for world maps because they give you a sense of direction and especially freedom, instead of like in X where you had to go along with what the plot dictated you had to do.

Im sure that I made it too...

Meh,

i think that the world map should make its glorious return to our screens, as with it we'll get controllable transport, which is where X and XII fail, they have none.

I miss the world maps because I could go to other parts of the world on an airship and not have to walk across all of God\'s creation to get there. The only thing good about not having was in X when you could run around a save point to level up and use the save point to heal. But of course on a world map I would just run in front of a town and then go in and use the inn if I needed it.

Challanging? meh like it would be annoying running into that many feinds but on FFX you have a map and u can look at it :D

Annoying? Nope. It gave you the freedom of where you wanted to go and actually flying the airship to that location. The world map was always the best place to level up. FFXII is slightly improved the map situation than FFX as in that it was simply A to B where as I like to go from maybe A to like H, I, J etc rather having to go through B. FFX just felt too inclosed. I think no world map is one of the bad changes in the FF series.

The world map was one of the best aspects of the FF series. Like everyone has said, it gives you that freedom to do whatever you want and go wherever you want.
FFX was still a great game, but it did feel a bit linear because you had to follow a certain path.

I wouldnt mind the worldmap being brought back. It was so much fun, although random battles could be irratating sometimes when you were in a rush. However, they were great for leveling up. Problem with 12 is that you can clear an area and thats it. Nothing else shows up unless to leave that area and return.

I've never played 12 but from the sound of it doesn't seem like something I'd like to play if I was absolutely honest with you.

Sure the world map did bring some inconveniences, but it was all worth it. It just adds to the unpredictability of the situation, right?
Though it isn't really realistic, isn't it?
But even so, I still found the world map fun to go about.

Uh..play it first before slating the game, jus by looking at opinions.

Look at this way - you would rather be walking around on a grassy plain looking at the same types of mountains over and over? Instead of being able to explore the area properly, and appreciate the actual beauty?

Random battles offered no challenge - just simple old levelling up and earning gil which would amount up, even if you had no use for it.

With FFXII, you actually have to put effort into actually, you know, levelling your characters - by the incentive of loot collecting, and selling the loot, earning gil - much better and more rewarding. Previous games - same old routine. Ah, forgot to mention - other rewards also apart from gil being made by good chaining and selling, and the generic EXP..are bazaar items.

Well, of course, if the detail is in it. :P

I thought leveling up in every FF was a challenge and you absolutely had to put effort into it too.
I don't mean to say anything bad about XII, but the 'incentive' seems a bit too complex than anything ---- but that of course, is based on the fact that I haven't played the game.....
I don't put too much stock on collecting items, exchanging them, making new items, and all that other stuff too much, really.

I prefer just selling them and buying new weapons. :worried:

Something tells me that if they brought back the world map, plenty of people would complain that it's too chibi and unrealistic. So many younger generation players are looking for realism, sci-fi and fast action.

I love the corny overworld perk, be it chibi or not.

I'd love to see the return of the world map. The ability to walk around and explore virtually everywhere you can instead of being locked into choosing specific locations, definitely something that I missed in FFX and FFXII.

The especially great thing about the overworld map is discovering hidden dungeons. XD
I thought the hidden dungeons thing in FFX was just lame.
Did FFXII even have hidden dungeons?

The world map's all right for older games, but it's adapting to the style of today's games. Sure FFX's was not all that great, but take a look at FFXII:

FFXII had a simple way of traveling from place to place in a manner where the controls were adaptable and the graphics were a beauty even when just walking around. I mean, you can't tell me that you woulda wanted an overhead shot of Vaan walking around in a game like FFXII with today's graphics' potential.

After FFXII I never want to see a World Map again.
I loved the feeling of accually exploring a place with the scenery and beauty.

Better than the same Grass Sprite Tiled over and over again.

My favorite part of FFXII was just walking out into the desert and just walking until I couldn't anymore.
Gave the game a sense of Adventure.

I dont think we will see world maps again in FF games. The same goes with the old battle styles.
