Yesterday, I was making tuna sammiches.

When I opened the can, the tuna smelled spoiled / rotten.

The meat looked healthy. It just smelled bad.

I hadn't eaten tuna in awhile & I started to question if it was normal for it to smell that way.

Being someone who dislikes like wasting food, I decided to try it anyway.

Some bites later, I had to throw it away.

I've eaten spoiled meat before and I remember all too well being in the bathtub for an hour or two puking my guts out. Sticking my fingers down my throat to make sure I got it all out.

Anyways, I felt fine yesterday.

But, not so much today. I feel kind of sick and lethargic and have no appetite.

So, I did some digging to see if semi-rotten meat is a naturally occurring event with starkist tuna & this is what I found:

Another one

I stopped short of preparing my family’s dinner when I noticed a very suspicious white substance that looks like fish eggs in 2 of the 3 cans of StarKist tuna I opened! ARE THOSE FISH EGGS? I’ve been eating StarKist tuna for 34 years and this is the first time I’ve seen anything like this.

..............................

edit: -- Think I found the reason for it:

StarKist, once a unit of San Francisco-based Del Monte Foods, is now owned by South Korea's Dongwon Industries. The title papers for Pittsburgh-based StarKist went to Dongwon two years ago for $363 million. Dongwon F&B was already the world's largest canned tuna business, but it wanted StarKist as a vehicle to make inroads into the U.S. market.

At the cannery inspection last Nov. 1-4, FDA found "serious violations" involving StarKist's seafood Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point plan and its production of low-acid canned foods. FDA said both the canned tuna and pouched packed tuna being produced by StarKist on American Samoa are "adulterated."

STARKIST TUNA

PEOPLE MIGHT WANT TO AVOID THE BRAND IF THEY CAN.

Well, what happened was... know how Home Depot has vendors outside selling food?

I got a chili dog from a vendor selling hotdogs. It was a shady looking lady with tattoos on her arms.

Because, the hotdog was covered in chili I didn't really notice how bad it was. It tasted funny, but I was really hungry so I om nom nom'ed it pretty quick.

Everything was good for about 12 hours. Around 4 am in the morning, I woke up with a bad taste in my mouth. I guess my stomach was rejecting it and I could taste rotten meat in my mouth.

Ran to the sink, puked. Still had the taste of rotten meat in my mouth. I didn't think it would be ok until I got it all out, so I got into the bath and stuck my fingers down my throat and puked repeatedly until I was pretty sure I had it all out. Took awhile.. if only because I hate puking and each time I did it I hoped I wouldn't have to do it again. lol

I rather eat my tuna that's caught and cut. None of this canned crap. I am glad you informed me so.

I am glad I do not have that brand here.

I'm glad I don't eat anything if it even SLIGHTLY smells bad or has any signs of weirdness. :ahmed: I will never buy from them again solely because the company isn't in America anymore.

Same Cali.

Except last night... I ate bread... with a tiny speck of mold on it and didn't realise until I saw some on the other slice of bread :sad3: I was horrified then I continued to eat it. (no not really :ahmed:)

What happens when you eat mold? Do you get fungus infections??

I ate moldy bread before. :ohshit:

It didn't seem to have an effect. :elmo:

Yes, sometimes. Depending on the type of mold. But I've heard that the mold on bread is penicillin so it won't harm you... not too sure on that though. :hmmm:

Anyway, if it's just tiny specs of mold on bread then don't worry about it. Just don't eat any more. If you had eaten a piece of bread that had a large portion of mold then it would have given you tummy ache at most :lew: Just make sure to toss that bag of bread out :lew:

and that was Cali's hopefully helpful advice. :licky:

I think it depends on the color & type of the mold. :hmm:

Most bread mold is white, grey or blue, iirc.

I think most types are pretty harmless. Its black mold and other types that emit neurotoxins, etc.

Don't worry, the bread went straight in the bin. I cried a bit though because it was a really good sandwich I had there and i couldn't finish it because of the bread :(

RIP Sandwich.

You have to ingest a fairly significant amount of mold, or have a preexisting condition, to have it manifest any sort of symptoms, but they can cause some problems such as diarrhea, upset stomach, that sort of thing.

Most mold spores won't survive the acidity of your stomach.

I am pretty sure I only ate the teensiest tiniest bit... so hopefully I will not die :(
