Ah, Yume Nikki. I downloaded this game not too long ago, and have been finding it difficult to sleep at night ever since, for 2 reasons:

1: It's addictive, and sleeping often comes second to finding more secrets in Madotsuki's twisted dreams,

and 2: It's absolutely terrifying.

For the uninitiated, Yume Nikki is a game where you play as a girl named Madotsuki. She lives on her own, in a small, squalid apartment, furnished only with a bed, a TV, a bookcase, a writing desk and a Famicom. She has precisely 1 game for this Famicom, a depressing little minigame called NASU. She refuses to leave through her door, although you can go out on the balcony. Basically, there isn't much to do.

Until you go to sleep, that is. When you go to sleep it's a whole other kettle of psychedelic hand-fish.

You see, the vast majority of the game takes place in Madotsuki's dreams. There are 12 main worlds to explore, each with its own sub-worlds. There are various "effects" to collect, ranging from turning your head into a lamp to changing your hairstyle to becoming a frog to wielding a knife. As you venture through her tortured psyche, you'll meet such things as the slender Toriningen, the oh-so-happy Uboa, and other weird creatures, most of which are completely harmless.

The most interesting thing about this game is that you cannot "lose" it. Whilst you can be trapped in an inescapable area by some creatures, you can simply pinch yourself awake-you cannot "die" in the traditional sense.

If you wish to play this intriguing game, you can download a translated version here: http://archive.uboachan.net/media/src/Yume_Nikki.rar

It was made in 2004 with RPG Maker and should be playable with almost any Windows computer (I'm afraid I don't know if it's compatible with Linux, Apple OSX, Unix or the like).

Anyone else played this game?

Haven't played it, but from your description it sounds pretty interesting. I will download it and give it a crack tomorrow and share my opinion then :)
