Well, my friend and I are both having trouble with our Xbox's (the old ones). My friend's Xbox is very dusty and dirty. So much so that it can't read any disk. It can still go to the menu, view what's in the memory, and play the songs he already downloaded on to it, but it can't play video games or CDs. Now the only thing its good for is being an oversized MP3 player.

The point is that he's trying to open it up so he can clean the inside. The problem is that he found the screws in the bottom, but the top won't come off. Do you guys have any ideas on how to open it up? or any other method of cleaning and repairing it other than taking it to a shop to get fixed?

I'd strongly advise against dismantling your console. While I can't point you in a direction that'll lead to a solution to your problem, I can tell you that taking your Xbox apart is not a good idea. You'll likely make the problem worse.

Hmm...I have heard of special disks that can correct internal problems to electronics. Supposedly, they attract dust and particles to themselves once placed within the electronic. Sounds a bit...unreliable.

I don't know any other solutions though
-do you know where I can get that special disk thing?

I think I recall seeing 'em at Gamestop. There were several items at the counter that's purpose was to ensure that a console remain functional.

Speaking of which, ask someone at Gamestop if they've got any ideas. The employees are usually fairly knowledgable. They should be able to point you in some sort of direction.

They won't charge for the information/advice they give you. ;)

They might try to peddle some sort of accessory onto you in an attempt to make a sale. But hey, it may work...

They'll most definitely ask you if you want to reserve a game. -_-
