Imagine it...
A prequel to all the games in the franchise...

FIRST FANTASY

Here is how I would do the story gist :

A game wherein the Crystal of Reality is threatened by a villain. A villain who seeks to seize the crystal and wield reality as his own. (think of it like someone wielding the Infinity Gauntlet). With the Crystal of Reality in his or her hand, the villain would then be able to alter reality as they see fit.

So... how could this a Prequel to all of the Final Fantasy games?
Well, in the final act of the story, the climax and after the final battle... you lose.
Yes. You lose the final fight. Your party of heroes is defeated and the villain seizes the Crystal for himself/herself.
And in their arrogance, they bring you close by lifting you up with one hand so that when they erase you from reality, they get to watch you melt away into nothing.
...only in the villain's arrogance, your character pulls out a gun and attempts to shoot the villain, only instead the bullet strikes the crystal.
And thus, reality splinters and spiderglasses, fracturing and shattering into many altered reflections of the true reality.
And thus, out of the thousands of fragments made by the destruction of the Crystal of Reality; we see the other Final Fantasy universes born.

Each one with a party of heroes.
Each one with a villain seeking to change reality to their own whims.
All copies of the original party of heroes and the villain.

Whaddya think?

The games that i believe have the most room for a prequel are:

Final Fantasy 2 The Rise of Emperor Mateus
Final Fantasy 3, A story of the Dark World and the rise of Cloud of Darkness
Final Fantasy 6,
Final Fantasy 8,
Final Fantasy 10

Yeah, but those would be prequels to events within each universe of Final Fantasy.

First Fantasy however, would be a prequel that explains the origins of the multiverse and how each one seems to be an echo of one another, explaining the reasons why we have things that exist in all realities as constants.
  • Crystals being central to the plots of many of these stories
  • Certain entities such as Ifrit, Moogles, and Chocobos existing in multiple non-connected narratives
  • There is always a Cid being found somewhere in the world
  • The villain always seeks to destroy the world or shape it into something that they would mold as they desire
  • The party of heroes that always comes to defeat the main villain is a rag-tag-mixed-bag of individuals that have very few things in common but are yet somehow all brought together and often have a past that is connected in some way.
First Fantasy would be the story of the original universe being fractured and shattered into multiple pieces so-to-speak.
The Reality Core being fractured prevents the villain of the first story from unmaking the world while also making it so that billions of new alternate realities now exist, each one an echo of the reality that was once singular.

It would also help to explain how Dissidia is even possible, as it is clear that in order to have a cross-over into World B, you would have to have some entities that are aware of the multiverse and that these other universes are somehow connected in some manner other than just franchise namesake alone.

In a a way, Dissidia was sort of an answer to the multiverse, I think it would be interesting to see a game where the first world was the birth of the other universes.
