I've seen them be discussed a lot not just in this forum but others and on the FF Wiki and have been wondering what they are.
What exactly are the Ultimanias?

I think they're books that explain and analyse the plot of a FF game. I'm not soo sure. I think they might be walkthroughs as well?

Yeah and they have information in there that isn't stated in the game and out of curiosity thought it may have been SE official but couldn't find anything about them.
Ultimania's are basically 'spoilers' about the characters from what I gathered.
Characteristics, names, people they know, history, and all that.
Some state facts about a character's feelings, or some might just give you a full explanation on their lifeline.
Just basically character and additional information profiles.

They are like guides that explain every single plot element in their respective games. They detail everything down to the smallest bit. Many things that may not have been explained in the main story is explained in them.
