I always search every single square inch of every single area in the game. I'm crazy like that I can't stand to miss a single hidden item. I'll walk around and just keep tapping the X button constantly.
But I also have a strategy guide which shows me the hidden locations of everything. I find for the most part, anytime there is a hidden item like that, it's usually a playing card.
