I humbly request that no one respond to this topic unless:
A) You live in New Orleans/New York, or an area of the U.S. which is in an equally dramatic state regarding racial segregation.
B) You are open minded.
C)
You've experienced said frustration regarding this topic.

Being as that I currently live in "the chocolate city" aka New Orleans (for the time being)...

Apparently, there is a new law (seemingly only in New York at the time) stating that the word "******" is illegal.
How can you illegalize a word?
Isn't that...isn't that completely contradictory to our constitution's "freedom of speech"?

Now I don't run around calling black/african american (or whatever the prefered medium is this week) people "niggers"...I have black friends, white friends, asian friends...and we all get along pretty decently...

Although...It's immoral (actually...now it's illegal) for anyone to say the word "******".
With the exception of black people; who run around calling each other niggers, left and right...

And before you start a flame war...I'd like to add that I'm actually NOT a racist person. So don't bag me unless you've got your facts straight.

Anyone else have a say so?

I fall under neither qualifier A nor C, but I felt the need to say something anyways. I will, however, keep it short seeing as how people like myself have been asked to refrain from placing in any of our input in the first place.

This is nowhere near the first time, nor anywhere near the last time that this has happened. Banning a word isn't even new. Whether it is a national or state regulated law, I am unsure, but I do know that in at least some states (perhaps even counties mandate this particular law...) men are forbidden to swear in front of women and or children. I bet that statement sparks a lot of memories about the poor guy in his boat :P.

That was all my non-qualifying ass had to say.

Right. But there's a difference between having moral standards and flat out taking someone's rights away.
It's immoral to shout out that someone is a ******...but it's ridiculous to ban someone from speaking their opinion.
I don't agree that you should run around calling black people niggers, I don't agree at all...But I dissagree with the political NONSENSE behind it all...

We're talking about America.
And I wasn't aware that other words have been banned before...

by banning the use of the "N" word, they have violated the first ammendment of the constitution just like you said. this law, if it ever made it to the supreme court would not hold up. though it never will make it there.

it, in my opinion, is a sad state of affairs when a word is banned for any reason even a bad word.

i can understand if the word is used in a threatening way. then law enforcement should take the appropriate action but that by no means includes the legislature getting involved by passing a law.

i agree with Bill Cosby, blacks should not call other blacks the "N" word because young children get the wrong idea.

So basically, if you're going to ban the word, "******", they may as well ban "fuck" and every other swear word in the book that's labelled "course slang" in the dictionary.

And any other word that is a racial slur or could be taking as one.

How about the word "cracker"?

See, this banning thing is just a paranoid overreaction to something that happens. It's like when they try to ban particular brands of music, violent movies or video games because they think it's a bad influence on people.

I see the point you are making. banning the word won't change anything either. Beyond people still using the word reguardless, racists will still be racists and the relationships between people will still be the same.

Well to be honest most ppl dont think that "Cracker"is a way worst word then"******"cause many white ppl think that "Cracker" is not a worst word than what they call other races like Mexicans"Beaners or wetbacks"Black ppl"Niggers and uncle toms"and jap"Tojo".So thats why most white ppl don't care if u call them "Cracker"but i did hear this new word for white ppl don't know if u guys ever heard some white guy being called a"Pecker Wood".So if there are going to ban just the word "******"they also better ban the other words that i said.
So really it won't solve anything it will just make it worse

If anyone ever called me a cracker I'd think it was the most retarded, hilarious, poor excuse of a come-back or insult ever.

Pleeeeease...whoever came up wth this word as a insult needs to be either a freak'n comedian OR harpooned between the eyes. Or both.

Well if u really wanna know it was actually a black man that called a white person a cracker during the slave days.Well do u atleast find the word "Pecker Wood" offensive.

I'm black, so i probably wouldn't understand, but what makes 'Pecker Wood' offensive?

See i don't know what it means but i have seen many white ppl that get mad when they get called this word for some reason.

HAHA, nope never heard it before. Sounds kinda humorous as well. Got anymore?

What I'm saying is, even in spite of my humorous view on a serious issue at times, we need to realize that names...are just words. Ok so I call Aztec a "bunglar" or a "goob". Big deal. People in this world are too up-the-ass sensitive.

Like I said, someone calls me a Pecker Wood, I'd laugh at them. Shows who the real mature one is doesn't it? Same with any of these insults. Name calling; cute. Congrats to those who never quite made it out of the second grade and still do this.

Well to me i don't know why black ppl find the word "******"offensive since were i go to school no one even care about that word at my school u can hear this like very 1 min"Was up my *****"So i really don't see why ppl still care about that sure its offensive but its just a word.

Oh, for goodness sake.

It's just a word. I often use slang words to describe people of another ethnicity, but I don't use such words in a derogatory manner, I just use it as slang. I would order a "Chinkie", I would be in the "Paki" shop. I've often been told off in school for saying "Paki", but isn't it IDENTICAL to being called a Brit? A Scot? I have nothing against such people, as a whole, and so why would I deliberately insult them all?

I don't tend to use the word "******" myself, but then it's not a common word here in Scotland. But "******" is just a word. Why ban it, because some people find it derogatory? I throw a hissy fit when some programs or news reports have been censored due to "strong language", but they're just words. It's not as though everytime you say "******," you're implying that they are inferior or anything. Sephiroth's right; why not go ahead, really trip themselves up, and ban "fuck"? "Shit"? "Bastard"?

EDIT:
Sephiroth said:
Actually, I thought "white trash" was the derogatory term for white people.
Apparently not. I don't believe the states have ever been shown the TV show, "Big Brother." It's a reality show where auditionees are selected to go on television, live in a close-knit house for X number of weeks and the British public watch them bitch.

Recently, there was a big hoo-ha over "Celebrity Big Brother," where Jade Goody, Jo O'Meara and others were slated as "Racists", courtesy of Shilpa Shetty, an Indian Actress.

Various things happened, which the media blew well out of proportion. Shilpa ended up winning Big Brother, despite her using the term "White Trash." Jade received death threats for saying "Shilpa Popadom." Special treatment, much?

Ask any white person here. Take a vote, make a poll for crying out loud.
Do the majority of white people CARE if you say "cracker", "white trash", "redneck", or "peckerwood"?
No...

This whole ordeal is an ass-kissing issue for something that happened over 200 years ago; an ordeal of which I had NO say so, or involvement with whatsoever.

For the most part, this entire racial war is between whites, and blacks.
You know what drives me nuts?

I went to a christian school in new orleans for a while, and I noticed that the pastor there would change his tone between talking to white students and black students...

When he talked to me, and the white kids, he had a monotone typical american accent...and when he talked to black students, he had this...slang "whattup?" shit going on...

ANY, I repeat, ANY time a white student slipped up and said "******"...it was automoatic suspension...permanant suspension...
And the black people ran around school calling themelves niggers all fucking day...

I personally think banning the "N" word is a bit much. Yes its considered offensive, derogatory, racist etc, but at the end of the day, these are words. They only afford as much harm/racism/offense as a person gives them.

Words are just words, no special powers, unless, they are treated differently then they become a whole different thing. I guess what Im trying (very badly) to say, is that unless people say fuck is a swearword and make a big issue of it, its just another word thats in the dictionary. The same would apply with the "N" word.
