Square Enix’s Hiromichi Tanaka has revealed to Game-Watch that the beta for Final Fantasy XIV will be a Windows only affair.

The director for the MMO revealed that the beta will be closed at first and won’t be continuous, as the development team want to monitor things that are going on in the closed beta.

However, as the game nears a release, the beta will be opened up and will be a 24 hour affair. It is currently unknown if the beta will be coming to the PS3 down the line.

The game is due for launch next year on the PC and PS3.

Cool! Do you know when the beta will be released? And how to get a beta-key or something like that? :)

I don't think the beta has been announced so far, but I imagine that it'll be around late 2009/early 2010 since beta's are normally quite a way off proper release dates.

As for getting a beta key, I honestly have no idea how MMORPG beta's work. It might be a case of waiting for a news site such as IGN to get given keys, SE releasing keys via email on their website or even giving keys to FFXI owners. I really don't know D;

Wait, if it's Windows only why is there a rumor about it being on the PS3 later? Do you think it will or am I just reading everything wrong because it's three in the morning?

Key word in that sentence: rumour.
Personally I think it will become a beta on the PS3 as it'll need to be tested on a large scale, however, I think that may be a bit after the PC version. I wouldn't hold your breath for a PS3 beta mind.

The beta is officially only for the PC. It is in the alpha stage right.

Also, if you want to try and get into the beta there are a few things that SE has stated over the past month that will help you to get into the beta.

1. Play Final Fantasy XI
2. Subscribe to the news letter on the official NA FFXIV site.
