Whether or not you think the summons were useful in battle, all of them had really complex backstories that made up one major story together. Not only does that story help develop the role of the Occuria but also helps you understand Ivalice and Final Fantasy Tactics. I personally disliked almost everything about the summons except for their designs and their backstories.

What do you guys think of the plot aspect of the summons?

im not sure i understand how the summons help you understand final fantasy tactics or the role of the occuria...maybe i didn't pay enough attention?

enlighten me..

If you read the bestiary after you defeat each esper it tells you historical information about each one.

Final Fantasy Tactics has a lot of the summons that are in FFXII. If you wonder how they come to be in tactics, it's somewhat explained in FFXII.

It also talks about the Gods expelling these espers to Ivalice. Those Gods are, of course, the Occuria.

Intersting, I will have to go back and read these again. I usually just skip through the bestiary.

And of course that's mainly why people bitch that they don't like FFXII's plot or that it's undeveloped...

FFXII has an amazing story if you look deep into it and pay attention to the way things are being spoken. Some of the most interesting facts of the plot to me were spilled when the Sun-Cryst is being mentioned and how it's a root for all power almost, and it's coveted by nearly anyone who knows something about it. Dr. Cid; Occuria; Ashe to a point.

The summons were there in history almost right from the beginning. They were delegated a role/job, but their pride got in the way for many of them; not all though. Some had a Thousand year war with the gods, lost, and were given new roles. The most notable come to be Belias who King Raithwall uses, Ultima who led the rebellion against the gods, and Zodiac who was suppose to be the Omnipotent Esper of all. Some fought to rebel, some were cursed because of their job (Cuchlain), and still Zodiac was banished for his powerful potential that he could reach at one point if he grew up; hence why he is eternally in the form of a child.

Don't think FFXII is in-depth? Maybe you're looking in the wrong places...or just not looking at all.

Still wasn't most of this mentioned in the Beastiary? I would've liked all the information about the Espers to be in the actual game and not have to read on it myself. That's just me. Luckily I get bored and read it though. XD

I'm kinda having to agree with Aztec with this - shocker I know. Though FFXII is a brilliant game, as is VI, but they suffer from lack of useful summons. At least with XII's Espers, they have an interesting backstory.

Yiazmat

Personally, I almost never use my Espers, but I do find their backstories to be well-developed. The bestiary, as a whole, is a splendid plot device. There were a few times when I spent hours reading the data from new entries and the story snippets that go along with them.

Yea, there was easily ten times more story content in that bestiary than in the rest of the game. Everything from places to people to races to history to esper information... just about everything you ever needed to know is contained within that bestiary. Just a shame it was never weaved into the story.
