Help Stuck on Shinra Boat

Im up to the part where the shinra boat has just left junon harbour, and im on the boat. and i cant get to the front of the boat to talk to barrett cos theres a guy in the way and i cant seem to get past him, any help? :S

You have to keep talking to the crew you can access. Going straight to Barret is impossible. Sooner or Later after 1 or more times talking to every one you'll be able to find him. Are you sure you've talked to everyone?
 
Talk to every one of the crew members (that pertains to your team), THEN go back to Aeris. She'll say something like, "By the way, have you seen Barret by any chance? I'm worried he's up to something stupid."

Afterwards, the passageway will be open, and you may proceed.

I had no idea you had to go see Aeris again, <.> I only remember having to speak to everyone first? Is that really needed?

Yeah, it's necessary. That line is what activates the next phase.

On the replay I did, I went around talking to everyone like mentioned above, but I accidentally talked to Aeris again after doing so. I just thought she said the same thing, so I thought nothing of it. When I went back up, it was all cleared.

For whatever reason (I think because of something that happened at Del Sol), I had to redo it. On the redo, I talked to everyone, as we all said. I went back to the lower deck, then came up again. The guy was still there. So I started talking to everyone again in an attempt to see if I missed anything. That was when I talked to Aeris - her conversation is the only one that changes, and it's directly about Barret. After that, it was all clear.
