Stuck in map

I've just started playing and haven't even gotten to a save point yet.
I got to the point where some guy tells me I can view the map he gave me by hitting select.

So I hit select.

So I got the map up and all I can do is select treaty Chamber.
Once thats selected I can't do anything.
O does not exit
Select does close the map
No buttons do anything
there's no on screen instructions except
"I must reach the king before he signs the treaty!"

I've tried a different controller too with no luck.
Am I doing something wrong, missing something stupid?

You haven't gone up all the way into the palace yet? As I recall there was absolutely nothing tricky or not straight to the point about the very first minutes of the game. The first save point was on a staircase I believe in the palace before you walk into the one room and get a FMV.

I'm not quite sure why you're having trouble...I must be missing something.

I'm not having trouble unless I go into the map view.
It told me to hit select to see the map so I did.
Now I can't get out of it.

I could just restart and play through without viewing the map, but why should I have to avoid viewing the map when it tells me I can view it.

Is this just a bug that no one else has noticed?

hmmm....it may be a problem with the disc. but, if it is, its probably only for that specific map screen, so just go through the first area without using the map and see what happens afterward, thats the best advice I can give, sorry.

I think I figured it out.
seems the triangle button on my controller is broken.
the other controller I tried was a ps1 controller so thats why that didn't work.
Whenever I get into any menu I can't get out of it.
I'm gonna get another controller tomorrow and hope that fixes it.
If not it may be a bas ps2

hm... thats a problem...
the problem can be of only any of those three parts, disk, controller or PS2.
If it does not work with the new controller, would be good to clean both the disk, and the lens from the PS2, cant say ive had the problem anyways. ive only got problems with a dirty lens, but ive got no other problems, and its an old console, been here for a long time.
