I am not a runner. :(

So...tomorrow at phy ed we get to run a half a mile

I know it's not that far, but the thing is it's all timed, and once we're done running we have to go through this insane obstacle course, that is a lot harder than the running.

So I need to run the half mile using the least amount of energy possible while also getting a good time.

So. Would it be better for me to jog it and keep up my stamina or run and take small break intervals? Which will make me less tired once I am done?

This. The best thing to do is find a comfortable pace and try to hold that for the entire distance. When you start going up and down, you use up more energy in the "up" phase than you can recuperate in the "down" phase, and it just tires you out more.

Find the quickest pace that you can still talk comfortably at, that is your pace

Never stop, if you really have to then just walk a bit to get your breath back

Don't really move your arms because that is an unnecessary waste of energy, run a bit like a t-rex, elbows at your sides hands in front

Depends on your fitness level, realistically a mile is not a lot for anyone with at least decent fitness levels. I think it was you who told me you did a lot of cycling so if you do that with good intensity then there's a possibility you could run the last 400 meters, at least. When you're moving your arms make sure they're moving in a linear action and not side to side to ensure you don't waste energy, if your arms are moving side to side chances are your legs will be too. Where possible try to maximise your stride length by keeping your knees as high as possible during the stride.

Also, don't worry about recovery, you'll recover fairly quickly after a mile. Ideally you'll have done sort some of HIIIT.

One of my friends was in the top 10 for fastest cross country runners in the state. We'd go running, sometimes.

I don't know how accurate this is, but this is what he told me.

-Feet directly beneath you supporting your weight. Center of gravity shouldn't be forward or behind the point where your feet touch the ground.

-Avoid excessive leaping or hopping, it wastes energy. Body shouldn't move upwards more than a bare minimum necessary to carry you forwards.

-Avoid feet making hard contact with the ground. It can lead to shin splints a type of injury caused by feet repeatedly making hard contact with a hard surface like concrete. Its also inefficient. Excessively light footed steps are also bad and inefficient.

-Keep feet as close to the ground as possible. Every inch higher they move burns excessive energy.

-Relax. Excessive muscle tension and stiffness will tire someone faster. Its better to be loose than stiff, er something. lol

-Etcetera.

There may be a technique to long distance running.

I don't know. I'm only repeating things others told me.

This is only half a mile so most of these tips wont even be needed, the main one I can think of is just not coming to a stop. Walking off a stitch or that is much better, anyhow there are no heroes in gym

Yes that was me. See? We are such great buddies.

And the last part is so true :jess:

I just jogged about 1.5 miles on my neighbors treadmill, and after a few minutes after I was done I was completely normal and I feel like I could have taken on more

Thanks to everyone, the tips did help for my run on the treadmill, I wasn't even that tired at the end  My ipod just died so I stopped. I actually quite liked it, you get into a type of trance thingy and keep running once you are halfway into the mile. I might do this again

I actually did loosen my hands during it, and I'm sure I would have looked quite funny ^_^ Not quite like a T-Rex, but close.

Imma be so great tomorrow :reptar:

That's the way to do it, however on a longer run like a marathon or mini-marathon every now and then you'd want to spin your arms round a bit and stuff. Otherwise your upper body would get very stiff and painful
