Okay whats up with Rikku(FF) and Riku(KH). Tetsuya Nomura was the character designer for both FF 10 and KH. Why would he name pretty much name two characters the same. Thoughts on why Tetsuya would do that. Though FF 10 came out first their develeopment definetly overlapped and I doubt Tetsuya named Riku(KH) without thinking about Rikku(FF). Thoughts?

It's just a name. The lack of a letter is enough to differentiate between them. I'm not sure what said names might mean in Japanese. However, even though they look identical to use, they could mean entirely different things in Japanese. It's like asking why we have Daniel and Danielle, Dave and Davina, Jean and John, and such like.

As I say, it's just a name.

I personally think it's laziness on Square's part. But, as you said, Riku, they could have different meanings in Japanese.

Are the two names even pronounced differently?

Im guessing that altho they are spelled similar to us they may be different in japanese? Altho I do not know, this is the only reason I can come up with

Riku is land in japanese (land, or air whatever) and rikku i have no idea. Riku was named like that because the 3 main characters- riku, sora and kairi all mean land air and sea.

why is it that most of the characters square makes have names based on things like that? cloud, squall, etc.

but anyway i see no connections or similarities between the two except that their names are off by a letter.

The names are different, and I don't think there's any underlying relation. Riku has a definite meaning to his name in relation to what Sora and Kairi mean, but I think Rikku is just a fantasy name derived from Nipponophone (is that a word?) sounds.

I think its in respect of some singer. Rikku (FFX) is actually modelled off this singer. I got a bonus disk with FFX that showed you her and she was a spitting double. Tetsuya has great respect for this Rikku and so uses her name more than once. The missing k is probably so he didnt have two characters named the same.

Riku

Gender: Boy

Origin: Japanese
Meaning: Shore

Origin: Finnish
Meaning: Nickname for Rikhard (Richard)

Pronunciation: (REE koo)
Form of: Itself (Riku)

I don't have any information for Rikku as it's kind of hard to find... Or maybe I'm just not looking hard enough?

Rikku's name is most likely not derived from any RL source. But my guess is that if it DOES originate from a real name/word, then you'd have to de-code it from Japanese al-Bhed.

Well, Riku and Rikku are pronounced the same but that's just like having a girl and a guy named the same just spelled differently. So, yeah.

Example: Toni & Tony.

One's a girl one's a guy. It's just how it goes. =/.

Actually, they're not pronounced the same. Japanese has geminate consonants, so the /kk/ in Rikku is pronounced longer than the /k/ in Riku.

In the English version they seem the exact same to me. I notice no difference in the pronounciation.

You're right about that. Since English doesn't really have geminate consonants, the VAs pronounced the two names the same way. Not to mention, since the two characters were never in the same scene together, it was a non-issue to not distinguish their names.

I do find it funny though how their clothing is close to the same. But it doesnt matter really why they chose two people with the same name.

But they did bring in the FFX2 Rikku in KH2. So who knows maybe its a plan they had.
