What are your thoughts? Do you find racism is still alive in modern day America? Why or why not?

Damn it, I forgot to add a poll. Admin, please add the following choices:

  2. No - Not at all
  3. To some extent
  4. I don't think about racism.

Warm regards,

Spam ftw.

Racism. Er. Let's see. Freedom of speech = Freedom of racism. XD.

Of course, the kids nowadays are taking a whole new liking to the racists words, using them in conversations and the like. Go view my thread in Mako Reactor. =D

Yes, but the fact that people seemed to be growing farther and farther away from the root meanings that it is disturbing. If anything, racism affects the older folks than the younger ones. There may also be the fact that there is racial profiling and stereotypes, which leads to racism.

Look at the effects after 9/11. =D

The fact is that words don't have any meaning unless you give them meaning. You don't have to take offense to certain words; some people just choose to. I've had black girls call me a cracker-ass-bitch before, but...it was more funny than it was offensive. Also notice how I can say the word "cracker" without offending anyone, whereas if I say the almighty "N" word, I'd probably end up getting myself demoted as a mod.

Predominately speaking...this whole racial war in America is between white and blacks; with the now-and-again clash of mexicans in the mix.

I actually spent a lot of time in New Orleans growing up, and I recently lived there for over a year. For those of you who don't realize...the city is roughly 70% african american, consists of about 5 mexicans who moved in to rebuild after Katrina, and the rest of the population is white.

Again...roughly speaking...about 90% of the black people live on the "West bank"; aka the bad side of town. And 90% of the white people live on the "East bank"; aka the rich side of town.

I had the luxury of living with my dad on the West bank, on a block that consisted of 3 white people, huddled together on the same street, with a surrounding area of ALL blacks.

I kid you not that when we would go to the grocery store, we would get nothing but dirty, foul, nasty looks from all of the black people in the store. The people there are generally rude, insensitive, and loud-mouthed; meaning that it's no secret when they're bitching about having "honkeys" in the store.

I have never; I repeate Never had a black person assist me in New Orleans. In public locations, I've always had to seek out a white person, or a rare asian to help me out.

Ever since I moved to Los Angeles...the racism is still obvious, but out here, it's predominately mexican where I live.

P.s. honey, didn't you hear that they're trying to illegalize the N word in New York?

@ the first part: You are saying none of the words that are used have history? XD. Sad. No matter what, they'd always be considered racist words. If the whites were segregated as part of a minority and given a term that was derogatory, I am sure most people white people would take offense. It's the same for any other race. The words that are used and the meanings should never have to repeat them self.

I personally take offense to being called a Nazi and the like. It's quite embarrassing to hear and to be reminded constantly of what happened in your race's past.

@The Second Part: No way it will pass. Violation of the first amendment.

Oh exactly. Of course the words have meaning, but...
It has everything to do with how you present it.
Anyone in their right mind knows when someone is trying to be offensive towards them. The thing that makes no sense though...is that black people are typically insulted by the N word, right?
So why do they contradict their so called "dislike" of the word by refering to one another as such, and in front of everyone like it doesn't mean a thing?

It's the fact that the younger generations aren't being familiarized and using it as a brotherly term between one another instead. If they brought the talk up with elders, I am sure they would be smacked a few times for using it.

Like I said before, the younger generations today are being mislead and deciding to free-base their vocabulary racism. I personally look at them trying to be funny, like how comedians use racism. Or they get it off of the T.V., Music, etc. It's all how the kids perceive it.

In no time at all, I will say that racist words will be in every-day vocabulary when my generation or whatever takes charge.

Some people take too much offense though. =\
Even the younger generation...they can call each other that name, but when someone else does...it's wrong.
It's like they're purposefully pushing others out of the "it's okay bubble". lol.

Do you want to know why?

They referred to themselves like that during 'slave' times. From there on out, it stuck. Now, back in those days, when white people used it, it often meant slave and the like. Therefore, only their race can call one another that....er....I think. However, it wasn't used much before now because people still knew the meaning and what the word reminded them off.

Have you ever heard a black person say...on television or IRL...that they think white americans owe african americans compensation for what was done in the past?

Yes, yes I have. In fact, I have seen people go to their family's slave owners and ask for compensation money. I think it's quite pathetic and childish, but I can see where they are coming from.

I can see where they're coming from, but...
Personally...my grandmother's family owned slaves.
But...if someone came up to me and asked for compensation, I'd be like "wtf, does it look like I own slaves??" o.0

You're such an asshole. XD.

Meh. I can't help but feel I'd do the same. But my family lived in Germany during the slave trade, so we never owned slaves. Go me.

Anyways, this is my last comment in this thread. I feel as though I am spamming it out and other people need to answer.

Actually, most of the poverty stricken parts of New Orleans is in uptown and downtown. The west bank is nothing compare to the 9th, 7th, 4th, and 8th wards. Man my home was a bad place. Anyway, racism does exist. And in my opinion, it is apart of the indestructible monster called 'Humanity'. Believe it or not, every single human base choice from key elements such as environment, memories, company and many other thing around them. And any of these influences can cause a action some people may find offensive and inappropriate. Now I'm not saying people contribute to racism
because it's in our blood. I'm saying that there are too many influences in the world humanity has created that can easily spark a flame...

as long as there is a human race, racism will always be there. You cant have good be just good. there is a little bad in every good

*Whistle* If I were a girl, and that happened to me, I'd be scared outta my gourd. Are you positive you did nothing to instigate that confrontation?

Oh no, that would be more disastrous than helpful.
Besides, people wouldn't follow that if it was abolished anyways, people have grown used to having their freedoms and they would like to keep it.

And to answer the poll, yes, racism is very, very much alive, not just in the US obviously, but the world over.
Hypocrisy runs rampant everywhere when people practice racism....
it's unjust and unfair.

I completely forgot about mentioning the different wards.
One of them was actually near my house...which one it was though, I've totally forgotten. The houses there are all still covered in blue tarps from the storm...
I lived in the outskirts of Gretna, right next to the expressway. o.o
So generally speaking, you're right. Where I lived wasn't all that bad.

But you have to admit...N.O. is full of racism. It's a terrible place to live unless you're in it for food or gambling. The economy and politicians there are too corrupt.
Most of the time IRL when people ask me, I don't tell anyone that I'm from N.O. XD

*Whistle* If I were a girl, and that happened to me, I'd be scared outta my gourd. Are you positive you did nothing to instigate that confrontation?

Oh no, I most certainly was frightened then. In fact...there was an incident once when a few of the girls in that specific "group" followed my friend and I home one day. They started throwing rocks at us (hit me with a rock btw), and beat my friend into a bloody pulp right in front of me.
You can imagine how bad I felt for not jumping in to rescue her, but...we were outnumbered like 6 to 2, and my friend was actually quite bigger and stronger than me herself. =\
I think actually they beat her up on account of her popularity at school. Then the next day at the principal's office, they all denied even following us.
