Devil May Cry 4
Introduction/General Comments
Devil May Cry 4, or any other game in the series for that matter, is a Hack & Slash/Action game. You control one character and can use both close-range and long-range weapons. The game is divided into "Missions" which can as well be called "Levels".
I am not really into action games, but I decided to play this game as I quite liked Devil May Cry 3. Those who play games only for the plot, better stay away from this game.
Those who can enjoy a game, despite the fact it has average plot, should try this one.
For those who love crazy action, it is a must!
Storyline [3.5/10]
As I already mentioned, the plot is the game's weak point.
This game focuses too much on the gameplay and it seems as the creators forgot to make a proper storyline for the game. Most of the time, the only thing that will happen is: Fighting, Fighting and FIGHTING!
There are really few moments which are somehow emotional or interesting.
To be honest, it looks like one of those plots which you can make up within 5 minutes.
You start the game as Nero, a white haired man which has an arm of a devil.
He witnesses how a mysterious assassin, which is white haired as well, kills the members of "The Order". He decides to chase down the assassin as well as to learn the truth about "The Order".
Characters [6.2/10]
The characters are what you call "cool" and "stylish". Their design, as well as personality is pretty nice. Though, there is a great lack to what they think or feel.
The only two who seems to have some feelings, are the main character Nero and his friend Kyrie.
But there aren't too many moments when they actually have a chance to show those feelings.
If you one of those who like "hot" and "sexy" women with revealing cloths, this game surely can satisfy you. While there aren't too many moments with those women, those few moments are surely enough.
Gameplay [9.3/10]
The game heavily relays on it, so it must be good.
Most of the game, you'll be fighting monsters by using close-range and long-range weapons, as well as Nero's special devil arm which can draw enemies near or throw them away. It is important to not only kill all enemies, but to be "Stylish" as well.
There two playable characters: Nero and Dante.
Nero is very limited and has only one sword and gun.
On the other hand, he has his devil arm which is probably the most useful thing in the game. His sword is special as well. It can be charged and then unleash very powerful fire attacks. His gun, on the other hand, is pretty lame.
Dante is the protagonist of the Devil May Cry series, but this time he has a secondary role. He has a nice selection of both Close-Range weapons and Long-Range weapons.
Starting from simple ones like "Fists" or "Shotgun", to some very unique ones like "Pandora" which is said to has 666 different forms and a really crazy long range weapon. In addition, he has "Styles" which can be changed during the heat of battle and allow him to unleash different original moves depending on the situation.
Both characters can change into "Devil Form" which boosts their powers.
For the most part, it boosts their attacking power. But there are other things about it which I'll let you discover by yourself.
Aside of fighting regular weak monsters, you will have to defeat a few challenging bosses. Thye can be pretty much anything you have ever imagined.
From a hell horse demon to a giant toad.
But don't worry, the game isn't all about buttons smashing. It offers some short puzzles which can challenge your brain for a while. Defeating bosses, can as well sometimes challenge your brain more than your hands.
Controls [9.9/10]
I hardly can say anything bad about it. For a game which has a lot of action, the controls are quite friendly and allow you to "feel" the action through your hands.
There are only two things which I could complain about:
1) The camera.. It is not the only game with such a slight camera problem and it is really can be annoying at times. The good thing is that I never hated the camera during battles. Rather only when searching for my next destination and the like.
2) The "Lock On" is quite annoying if you want to shot different targets in a row without killing them. But I found it useful most of the time, so can't really complain much about it.
Graphics [8.1/10]
They are pretty good, even though I have expected more from a PS3 game.
During cut-scene the graphics are pretty much the same as in-game.
So while during the cut-scene you may say that the graphics are average or lame, when you actually play: You'll probably change your mind for good.
The monsters are very well designed and look deadly thanks to the graphics of the game.
Sound [9.0/10]
Most of the music, if not all of it, is rock. While I don't really like rock, it perfectly fits the game's atmosphere. There are a few sounds I really like from this game as each boss has it's own background music. You may pay some attention to the music in the beginning, but you'll soon almost completely forget about it because you'll be busy slaying tons of monsters, or maybe one BIG monster.
Unique/Extra Features [8.5/10]
Upon completing different difficulty modes of the game, you will receive different things. It can be extra cut-scene, another difficulty mode, new information or something else.
The one I enjoyed the most was the "information". You can view all demons and characters profiles and learn more about them, or maybe just take a closer look at them. As I don't want to add spoilers, I'll leave it as it now.
Replay value [4.2/10]
I have to admit that I was really disappointed with this game's length.
It has a small number of missions which are short and repetitive.
After completing a certain difficulty mode, you'll get another mode which is more difficult. You can repeat that a few times until you get the hardest mode in the game, as well as some original and funny modes. I can't say I am really enjoyed replaying the game in different modes. Probably because the only real difference it is the power of the enemies. If you learned how to beat each enemy in previous modes, you'll have really small trouble doing it again in the harder modes. The only difference will be that it'll take more time and will be more dangerous.
But it really doesn't offer anything cool for replaying, unless you want to prove you are "the best of the bests".
Overall Rating: 7.5/10
