In A Final Fantasy Game - particulary the earlier ones - do you prefer your characters having pre-selected Jobs - Like In FFIV - rose being Archer/White mage Rydia being Summoner Etc or do you prefer it in games like FFV when you get to master and choose various jobs.

Heres my analaysis on the systems of FF1-10 just to refresh your memorys  Along with my own personal opinion on whether the "ability System" was easier or harder.

FF1 - you get to choose your job classes at the beginning - this is fine as then the jobs are set in stone - Easy

FF2 - everyone can pretty much do everything - this annoyed me as it was complicated and fiddly enough in the first place -_- - Complex

FF3 - its difficult to choose which jobs you should or shouldnt master and which abilitys to learn - Complex

FF4 - Each character has their own set jobs and can only learn skills that the job allows - Easy

FF5 - see FF3 but its more complicated - complex

FF6 - kinda a combo of the two - each character specialises in something but can be trained to learn everything - Easy

FF7 - See FF6 but each character is meant to have a certain role - Cloud as a warrior Aeris as a healer Etc - Easy

FF8 - You can pretty much turn everyone into Clones here, very easy to manipulate system - if you understand it - Easy if you understand it

FF9 - Each character has their own uniue skils that cannot be learnt by any other character - Dagger and Eiko are exceptions - although they Variate later on - Easy

FF10 - Each character with the exception of kimahri has thier own primary job - the path of which you are encouraged to follow - Easy.

Now as you can see i find the games where the characters have their own unique Pre-picked out jobs easier than the games where you get to choose which jobs to master and adapt with, as those games require more random battling - in order to master abilitys and eventually the job as apposed to the pre-picked jobs where you get the abilitys straight away.

If this sounds like a load of gibberish - which it probably does  please forgive me - its 4am here and i had about 6 hours of sleep so my minds not in its best state right now

I prefer pre picked jobs too but sometimes job systems are fun to work with.

I think when a character has their own special abilities it makes them more unique. I always imagined that becoming a good knight, warrior, mage, ect would take YEARS of training, study, and experience.

I like the idea of being able to pick your own job. Final Fantasy I was a bit too basic. You just picked your characters and their jobs right off the bat. Apparently they all met in a frat back in college or something, because they certainly don't meet up during the game. Final Fantasy X gave you a fixed job for each of your characters because they wanted the jobs to represent the characters personality. I like that but I'd like a little bit of a choice. Final Fantasy XII gave me that choice, but it really didn't matter because once you filled out the lisensce board they could be absolutely anything at any time. That = lame.

I'd like modern RPGs to take a page from MMOs on the character development front... and that's about the only way I want them to emulate online games. I'd like to start off with raw characters and be able to pick which jobs they get. There might only be a limited range for each character (warrior, monk, thief) but at least some ability to choose and develop your character over time. Allow them to grow into a job, but not allow them to be EVERY job.
