Fallout 3. Left 4 Dead. Metro 2033. The list seems to be growing larger and larger.

Post-apocalypia, of course, is that newest of gaming setting themes that sets the narrative in a devastated world where humans struggle for survival against deadly and often mutated horrors.

What do you guys think of this intriguing theme?

Personally I think it's a breath of new life (not really...literally >.>) to a world of gaming saturated with modern, futuristic, wartorn universes. I think this gives developers excuses to combine what is both futuristic and what is realistic into games.

I don't mind the genre myself. I loved what I played of Fallout 3, and I just looked up Metro 2033, and that looks pretty interesting, too. It's definitely a neat setting because, as you said, it just seems sort of realistic. Kind of like how all the space stuff is sort of realistic, but a lot of the post-apocalyptic stuff also seems like it'd be closer to the present time, which I suppose makes it more relate-able. Or maybe I'm just talking out of my arse. I'm not sure. :hmmm:

I just hope it doesn't become the next cliché thing, since it does seem that there are a nice chunk of games recently that are falling into the post-apocalyptic genre. I remember back before Dark Sector came out, it was going to be this awesome game where you played a stealthy ninja robot guy on some space station in the middle of nowhere. Then the developers decided that science fiction games were becoming too trendy and cliché, so they made the game into something completely different, which was really disappointing, especially considering they had already released some trailers that looked pretty incredible. I'd hate to see developers overuse this theme, too, since it seems so promising thus far.

I like it, it sets a more dramatic tone to the games. Specially Fallout 3, shows the horrors of nuclear war and that we arent always safe. Amazing and terrifying.
