I'm not sure if this would belong here or in the literature section.
most people think of 'childish' when they see the word pokemon, and they'd be correct. but this manga is much less childish than the anime. It has overarching plots and a progressive narrative that the anime lacks (namely 'cause it isn't geared for 5 year olds, but more of the 12+ group). The battles are *gasp* innovative and *double-gasp* well-choreographed, with the pokemon using their abilities in ways the anime and games don't portray (and in some cases don't want to portray). The characters grow on you quickly, and are fairly 3 dimensional for their archetypes. Another aspect that it covers is death - hyper beams can and do kill people and their pokemon, a pokemon using slash WILL cut others in half, and team rocket is much more than a gang of burglars this time around.
the material is mostly shounen, but it doesn't disappoint. if you haven't read it and you like pokemon, i strongly suggest it. even if you don't, it's good enough that you might become one.
