Just thought I'd post a couple of recommendations that no computer should be without. All programs in this list are freeware, and work with most current operating systems..

Anti-Virus
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Spyware
Ad-Aware
Spybot S&D Search and Destroy
SpyWare Blaster
SpyWare Guard

Browsers
Mozilla Firefox
Opera

You may notice that I haven't listed any Firewalls, this is because ZoneAlarm is the only free one that I know of, and I personally do not recommend it. I found it to be a resource hog, and Windows Firewall on XP + my router's firewall does the job for me alright.

Nice list but I use NOD32.
Im not going to put descriptions since you can find all that on the site.
Ill add some more:
OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 (free, open-source alternative to MS office)
VideoLAN 0.8.4a (the best free media player)
Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 (powerful email client)
Audacity 1.2.4b (best free sound editor)
FileZilla 2.2.18 (fast FTP and SFTP client)
7-Zip 4.32 (free file archiver with very high compression rate)
GIMP 2.2.10 (best free image program [best alternative to photoshop])
IrfanView 3.98 ( very fast, small, compact and innovative Freeware (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows.)
Foxit Reader (PDF reader, better than adobe reader)
PDFCreator 0.9.0 (create PDF's)
Ill add more later, PM me for any request.

I'd recommend iTunes, even though it works better on Macintosh computers than on Winblows. However, I can't remember if it is free. I'm sure it is.
iTunes is completely free but i recommend Winamp, there is a pro verison but the extra features are so little and so unlikely to be used. But thats based on my computer, i found iTunes laggy and nto good for me but i would use it if i had a msc but i use linux and windows.
