question why can't you form parties at north road or is it just me

You can't. I tried to team up when i was there before, but this place won't let you.

In some areas, you are not allowed to form a team. This was done to try and get players to go through the game by themselves.
If your having trouble, go train some more and try again.

It's like that because the areas before Poft were created before we could do NPC fights, so we had to use the rather archaic trick of limiting party fights. Also, it's helpful to members, since they might as well start getting tough early on before the relly tough monsters come along.

Interesting. Well, that's also a problem since Lich is so damn hard to beat. I heard that in Poft you can learn spells. am I correct or is it someplace after beating Lich?

I believe you get your first spells in Cadoan, which is after the Lich.
If you are having trouble, try leveling up another level or two or moving your stats around a bit.
