hey guys,
i just started playing ffxii and i'm slightly overwhelmed. it's my first ff game, and the only other fantasy/rpg games i've played have been MUCH simpler (i.e. namco's "Tales" series).
there's a few things that i'm kinda uncertain about... if anyone could point me in the right direction i would really appreciate it!

1) license board = O.O ! i'm used to having set ranks for my characters (i.e. black mage, melee, etc.). what can you guys reccommend for a good basic party? also, what should i focus on buying first? is it better to give each character a broad spectrum of things (i.e. each character has some black magic, some white magic, some technicks, etc.) or to have each character focus on one particular section?

1.5) also, i'm used to having every character gain exp. from battles, instead of just the ones that were in the active party. do you reccomend that i rotate my characters so they level up equally, or should i stick to a core team and level them way up, leaving the others in the dust? right now it seems like Fran (and sorta Penelo too?) are kinda weak, so i've been kinda ignoring them and rotating Vaan, Ashe, Bach, and Balthier. comments?

2) levelling up. i'm currently at Raithwall's Tomb and i'm on level 11-14... i checked out some faq's and they all say i should be around level 25! :holyshit: any comments? how can i get some quick leveling up? does anyone remember what their avg. level was at this point in the game?

3) this kinda goes with the license board, but the weapon system is VERY overwhelming to me. can anyone link me or copy/paste or give a quick overview of the basic pros and cons of each weapon? i get that some have one or two hands, some need ammo, some have longer range, etc. but i don't understand how each one effects the character's... um... abilities? like strenth, magick power, etc. should i choose only one weapon type for each character, or should i let each one have a variety of types? that kinda goes along with how i should spend my license points. can anyone reccommend a good weapon for each character?

i really really really REALLY appreicate the help, guys! :tighthug:

Go fight a massive number of the same monster and get a huge chain; this allows you to get better items. As for the LP board I suggest going guns they have good range and deal damage around the same as most of the powerful swords and spears, but they also get weaker the farther you are and can damage you. You really can get to the Scorpio gate by level 25 using this strategy.

I'm a battle mage kinda guy myself, i usually try to invest in the licenses that give you better attributes then get helpful magic like green and time magic ofcoarse get white and be be selective about black because i never really found it helpful in most parts of the game, also since you such a low levels go for quickenings they are a lifesaver during boss battles,

as for weapons guns are long range and ignore defense which makes them great damage dealer but just a little bit slower, swords are standard they count in strength and defense of enemy, poles actually do damage based on the opponents magic defense(wouldn't recommend it but you could keep one handy just incase) bows dmg is determined by strength defense and speed but also the weather can affect them, crossbows are similar to guns, they cant miss but take into account defense, Axes, Maces and Handbombs can rather do a lot of damage or very little damage at all, katana's are good for combos as are ninja swords, measures, rods and staves are mostly used as magic supplements and spears are similar to swords and are really strong

my recommendations- guns, swords and spears

you need to battle a lot of the same enemies to get a massive chain and then start filling out the Lp board. It'll take some time its a huge game and very overwhelming since its your first game. Most of us here have had the experience of other final fantasy games to know just how large it can be and we kind of have built up a tolerance to it all. I can't imagine the joy your going through. But anyway in this game ffXII everyone is basically going to end up a battle mage. They all have the same Lp board so that means by the time you start getting to the end of the game they will all pretty much be the same just different weapons. I suggest doing all the hunts and fighting enemies and lvling 5 or 6 lvls above what the guide says just to be on the safe side. Some of the bosses will really tear you a new one otherwise. Its a fun game and i suggest getting the guide to help since most of the epsers you will have no way to find out what to do

Guns? No, not at this point. They take too long to attack... I'd recommend taking a few runs through the Sandseas, as the supply of Urutain-Yensa is great for leveling. (Just don't disturb any Salamand Entites or they'll grind your ass into the ground.)
I do know a really reckless way to level up and get a decent axe at the same time, but I wouldn't try it for a while.
At this point of the game, I think I mainly relied on axes like the Francisca, and strong shortswords like the Demonsbane. I stuck with bows with Fran, and I had Ashe with spears. Just get whatever weapon you think is the best, however, I wouldn't recommend Guns unless you're fighting a boss with an elemental weakness that matches a set of gun ammo you can equip.

Yeah i would stick to doing some training first. In FFXII you can't expect to go through the game without grinding. I would say some of the best places to train early on are the giza plains as well as the dalmasca westersand. Also if your looking for some good weapons a very powerful sword you can obtain early is the demonsbane but in order to get it you first have to beat the demon wall which has around 20,000 HP.

I'm agreeing with demondestiny. Level up until all characters are ~23. This will help in fighting the first Demon Wall to get the Demonsbane sword. As for training, there is an area south of the Tomb, across the bridge and to the side (go to the left I think). It's accessible by another bridge. When you cross screens, if you have Libra on, there should be about 4 bombs in front of the bridge. In this area there is an abundance of those walking upright eagles.

Oh yeah, if you're new to FFXII, make EVERYONE learn at least 1 Quickening and learn how to chain Quickenings. It will help in about every boss battle.

For the Liscence board, I my aim is to just try and cover everything, therefore everyone will be experts at everything.

On the subject of weapons, basically I would have everyone hold a weapon which increases their overall stats. I wouldn't care about Guns, Crossbows etc at this stage. If I remember correctly, almost everyone in my party at that time had a Javelin. I only changed weapon types much later in the game.

1) After each battle you recieve LP, which is like points that you can spend. I think that the best way is for you to try to complete the Board with each character. Deviding them up in different jobs is not a good idea in my opinion. You should start at different locations of the grid.

1.5) What I do is, everytime one of my active characters levels up I switch it with another character with the least EXP. And keep doing that until you get used to it.

2) I suggest you go back to the Dalmasca Estersand (or wherever the Tomb is located) and slay some beasts, also don't forget to use your Licence Board.

3) It's true about the weapons abilities. Say you wanted to cause Blind to a bird, you couldn't reach with a sword and so the attack fails. But if you use a gun or a bow (etc.) it'll work.

Also, all of the comments above are very good, I'm sure that they will help.
And I hope that Final Fantasy XII hasn't made a bad impression on you. You know, you could get FFX on PS2, that way you'll be able to understand the Licence Board some more.

Too long eh? you must have forgotten that the best one is open right after a few events. Also the walls are cake with them.
