I decided to post this thread because I want to hear your views on this often overlooked dictator. Plus it complements the Hitler one in terms of history and views.

For those of you who don't know, Mussolini was Italy's dictator from the years 1923 until his death in 1945 during the close of World War II. He greatly expanded Italian borders during that war by the annexations of territories in North Africa and inland Africa. He supported the leftist movement that led to the downfall of the democratic Spanish government during the Spanish Civil War. Yet his armies suffered disastrous defeats first from the Ethiopians, the Yugoslavians, then the Greeks, then the British, and ultimately from the United States.

I'm not going to post more about my opinions on him as I want to hear your views or thoughts about him, as obviously as his evil was far from that of his Nazi counterpart.
For the purpose of debate, I'll be posting catalystic posts to keep this going, i.e. I could or could not appear to be taking his *Mussolini's* side.

Post your thoughts then, and discuss....

EDIT: This purely motivated by interest and curiousity, was he bad? was he evil? what? not that I'm an advocate of their views.

I personally think he was kind of a poor excuse for a dictator myself, and I'll simply leave it at that.

But he wanted only to expand his country and see his country great.
It looks like patriotism to me.
Am I right in saying that anyone who's a patriot would do what his country calls him to do? Who wants his country in the backwash?

Yeah, and it also can be said that Hitler wanted to see his country great as well. There is a line where patriotism becomes unacceptable. They simply both crossed that line.
