Suposse you and a friend decided to race. You both sit down in front of a tv with a copy of FFI ready to play. The winner will be the first to complete the game and will receive a prize straight out the their wildest dreams. As the game begins the first task is to choose a party. Obviously, a party that will move through the game quickly is desired. However, it is important for the party to be stable enough to avoid the very inconvenient total party death. In a race total party death will cost you valuable time and game progress.

What party would you choose?

Do you choose fighters for the astounding offense and defense?

Thief so you can run all the time?

Black belts for their no need of equipment?(saves time and money)

White mages to keep the party alive?(dont forget the Exit spell either)

Black mages to quickly dispatch large numbers of enemies?

Or a Red mage for a little bit of everything?

To win the race which party would you choose?

Thief. If you're that damn good at FF I, you will spend the absolute minimum possible amount fighting. Hell, if you're lucky, you would be able to finish the game in 2-3 hours.

Very true, if you could run all the time you would move very fast but the risk factor is very high. The odds of getting killed by the first stiff breeze is pretty likely. My first guess at the best would be 3 fighters and a whit mage. Any other ideas?

4 Fighters. lol I'm actually downloading a speedrun of the game right now where the guy did it in an hour and 15 minutes or something. He had 4 warriors. I'll upload it via .zip when I'm done downloading it.

An hour and 15 mins?
wow i wanna see that lol. took me a fair few hours past that

id say 2 fighters a white mage and a black mage. You wouldn't be able to run, but ur pretty much secure to win most battles, thats just my opinion though

1h 15m is amazing. what system was it on? Was it on an emulator(sp?)? My fastest time was with 1 fighter, 1 red mage, and 2 white mages on the ps1 version. Now this is definitely not an optimal party for speed but it took me just over 14 hours.

NOBODY can beat FF in less than two hours without using tool assistance, glitch usage, and plenty of reset abuse. These videos are NOT real speed runs, so if you think you can just sit down and play FF 1 in an hour and a half, you are sadly mistaken. :P

I read about the 1h 15 min game. It was done with a lot of game manipulation through resets and the like. However, still very impressive. I hope to find a way to watch the actual game later. I would guess applying a stategy like this would take a large amount of time with all of the resets required. This strategy would fall under the high risk category with much potential for speed. For my competition I do not think it would be very practical but who knows?

I am not concerned with the game clock as much as I am concerned with the amount of actual time it takes. The use of a reset strategy would not be time efficient. I want to know how to beat the game as quick as possible weighing speed with reliability.

Any more suggestions?

Still, I would like to see the 1h 15m game for amusement purposes.

I'd have to say 4 fighters for the sake of destroying everything in your path. If you run all the time, you can get crushed in the endgame pretty easily. Magic is good, but fighters seem to handle anything that is thrown at them.

It really depends on play style. I'd probably go with
2 Fighters
1 Black Belt / another fighter
1 Black Mage

The three main fighters are obviously there to destroy things, while the mage hastes them for more damage and can nuke large amounts of enemies.

And yes, running in all random battles would not be a good choice to survive the endgame, or the midgame for that matter :/.

Apparently he didn't put any armor on his 4 fighters since it puts the evade factor through the roof. I didn't really realize the dodge penalty was that much for armor but it does make sense.

I noticed the no armor thing also and was a bit surprised. Did you actually get the movie to run?

The suggestion of 3 fighters and a black mage is interesting, thanks for the input.

For a race to complete the game with a friend (and I'm assuming this is the 8-bit version) I would have to go with a party of one Fighter for obvious tanking reasons, One white mage for curative reasons, (saves time on having to buy one potion at a time) and Two red mages for all around fighter reasons.

4 warriors could do it the fastest, don't have to worry about MP and they can heal each other a little later in the game

I think 4 fighters would be the best choice. On my one playthrough (T_T) my fighter was the only character never to get KOed. In fact, he never lost more than half of his HP. So 4 of them would own anything IMO.

Exactly. Honestly I'm not sure why they really even included the other job classes. I guess it gave the game variety... but the other classes really weren't useful.
