When you're in first then you can use the bananas/shells to defend you like in most of the previous games. It'll stop anything apart from Blue Shells and other Special items like Lightning etc but it'll protect you from most other things.
Managed to get over the 8000 point margin online last night which was sweet. The win that got me there was awesome on the last lap, actually hitting someone with a thrown Banana, a Blue Shell while in 4th taking out the guy in first then a mushroom edging me past the last two on the final straight all in like 30 secs. I felt like a 150CC computer controlled character with that Godlike setup.
