I love finding stuff in games I didn't notice on the first few play-throughs.

So I wanna share some of them, in hopes they'll be interesting to at least a few people. "And then again," as Maechen would say, "maybe not. Who knows?"

Obviously, a lot of players will have found these. But some are pretty obscure, and many players won't!

Obscure Little Things #1: Lulu's Mentor

Remember Lady Ginnem? There's a couple scenes about her on the Farplane:
1. If you backtrack to Guadosalam before visiting the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth, you see Lulu looking for Lady Ginnem (although she doesn't admit that's what she's doing).
2. If you go to the Farplane after Yuna sends Ginnem, you see Lulu confiding in Ginnem as she doesn't seem to confide in anyone else. It's only one line, but very revealing: I get the impression that Lulu looked up to her first Summoner the way Yuna looks up to Lulu.

Obscure Little Things #2: Yuna's Stalker

wantz.jpg

(Halfway up Mt. Gagazet, a guy with an Aussie accent appears):
Wantz: Greetings, Lady Yuna. My name is Wantz.
Yuna: We have met several times before, right?
Tidus: Not running today?
Wantz: I have to carry on my brother's business. You've met him, I think. O'aka XXIII, merchant extraordinaire?
Tidus: Wait, you're that guy's brother?
Wantz: Mm. (Nods) My brother wanted to come help Lady Yuna. But the temple imprisoned him for helping traitors.
Tidus: They imprisoned him because of us?
Watnz: He doesn't regret it, though. In fact, he told me before they took him... "Don't worry about me, just go help Lady Yuna."
Yuna: But, why would your brother do this for us?

Wait, who was this guy again, and why did Tidus ask him about running around?

That's because he was stalking Yuna starting all the way back in Kilika. Again and again he appears -- on the ferry, in Luca, in the Thunder Plains -- taking snapshots of Yuna. What possessed O'aka's little brother to become paparazzi? He seems like a nice enough chap!

-- If you go back to the Farplane just after leaving Guadosalam, you find Wantz there talking to one of the images of the dead -- his older sister. He tells his older sister about Yuna, says, "She looks a lot like you, sis," shows her the pictures, and reveals that his sister was a summoner who died on pilgrimage.

-- If you go back to Luca AFTER getting things sorted out with Lord Mika near the game's end, you find that O'aka has been released. For once, the guy actually gives some straight talk:

O'aka: Hello, there!
Tidus: Hey, weren't you in prison?
O'aka: Nah, those monks are pushovers, I tell ye! I'll fleece any priest, or my name's not O'aka!
Tidus: Sorry. It was our fault they locked you up.
O'aka: No problem! Anything for a customer, eh?
O'aka: You know...I had a sister. Wantz's older sister, you see. A summoner, she was. Went on pilgrimage at a young age. And that was it. Aaah... Me and Wantz, well, neither of us were fighters enough to be guardians. I think about it every day, I do. If we could've helped her. Least I can do is try to help another summoner, I figure. And Lady Yuna, she looks so much like... (Sigh)
Tidus: Eh?
O'aka: I-It's nothing.
Tidus: Say, thanks.

Obscure Little Things #3: Things to See on the Ferries

If you wander around on the SS Liki, you'll catch glimpses of dolphins playing around the ferry. Also, while Kimahri doesn't say anything, if you hit "X" enough times, Tidus pesters him enough to get shoved. (And then stamps his foot like a weenie. Dumb, Tidus.)

When you first embark on the SS Winno, the second ferry, the Luca Goers and Aurochs are both down in the hold. One of the Goers warns you that the women on his team are up to something. Keepa seems nervous. If you go back down after Bickson and Graav make fun of Tidus in front of Yuna, you'll find that Keepa's been abducted by the ladies. He's squeaking "help!" from somewhere in the back behind a curtain. Botta (ever helpful) is worried about what they're doing to him, but half wishing they'd kidnapped him instead.

Obscure Little Things #4: How to Piss Off Auron -- an Infinite Loop!

After killing Maester Seymour, Auron shouts "Run!" and everyone runs outside the temple. Once you step onto the icy path, a whole swarm of Guado chase you. But before that, there's a save sphere plus the ever-helpful O'aka with a sack full of potions to sell.

If you turn around and try to re-enter the temple at that point, Auron comes charging back and yells at Tidus. "Where are you going?" or "Hey! Hurry up!" or various other quotes. Then he runs away, and O'aka waves at him.

Every time you try to re-enter the temple, Auron comes back and yells at Tidus again.

I imagine him getting increasingly irritated, but I still haven't found the version where he loses his temper and beheads the boy.

:cheer: I love this game and I love this post!

Those two Lulu videos made me a little emotional... I don't think I saw either scene on my playthrough.

Someone yesterday told me to "get a life" when they found out I'd made a complete transcript of FFX.

And they were so totally right.

Yet I really enjoyed discovering all these bits and pieces of a game I loved, which I'd never have found otherwise!

It also helped me write better fanfiction, because I know the world -- especially all the minor characters -- as well as a typical Tolkien geek knows LOTR.

And while some of the extra cutscenes are boring -- there's one you can trigger of Lucil, Elma and Clasko reporting in at the Checkpoint -- most are emotionally moving, like these.

Correct me if I'm remembering incorrectly, but that Checkpoint scene... is that near the point in the game when you have to fight Sin at the end of Mi'ihen Highroad? Because that part gets me, too! It's so sad.

It is, but you may be thinking of Gatta begging to be allowed to fight in the front lines, and Luzzu sending him to the maesters' headquarters to keep him safe. (One or the other dies depending on what you do.)

There's also a less emotional scene a little bit earlier. Remember back at the end of the grassy area, there's a blockade, and at first Yuna's not allowed through. Then Seymour comes up and charms her by ordering the gate captain to let her party pass.

If you turn back just then -- before entering the gate -- Clasko's off to the side moaning that he's lost Lucil and Elma. If you offer to help him find them, he loans you a free chocobo, and you can run around some more. If you talk to Lucil or Elma (who are patrolling the lowroad and highroad), they'll come back with you to the gate and have a rather boring cutscene reporting that they've cleared all the civilians out of the way. Most of the hidden scenes add a little more emotional punch; that one's bland. (But I still like to do it, because I adore Lucil and her puppydog, Elma.)

OHHH.

OK, either I didn't do that or I've forgotten about it. This game is due up for a replay anyway.

I can't remember if you get anything for going back and fetching Lucil and Elma. A pity, as they are fun characters (or would be, if Elma's American dub were not the WORST in the entire game. Oh, Elma!Japanese!voice, how I miss thee!)

Hmm. So, let me see. What are other fun things I enjoy?

Backtracking After Big Plot Points
A lot is going on in Spira, partly as a result of things Yuna witnesses or influences.

Major plot points that trigger NPC dialog shifts:

-- After you win the Cup and head out to the Mi'ihen Highroad, turn back to Luca to hear how the whole city is buzzing about the Aurochs' victory. (how to win) Or, if you lose, they'll have a different set of responses.
-- The dawn after Operation Mi'ihen you can backtrack all the way back to Besaid. The Warrior Monks take over guarding Luca (formerly the Crusaders' job), and various wounded Crusaders wash up all over Spira, broken and demoralized. You get a strong sense of how Operation Mi'ihen has turned popular opinion against the Crusaders and towards the warrior monks who are Yevon's secret police and Kinoc's personal militia. The more you look, the more evidence you see that it was all a clever ploy of Kinoc's (and Seymour's).
There's an unusual couple on the front of the SS Liki...talk to them (and bystanders) for a cute bit of minor NPC backstory.
If you go all the way to Besaid, there's a few hints that Isaaru and his brothers were there and made a good impression on the villagers -- then "disappeared" rather suddenly!
-- After you enter the Thunder Plains, backtrack to the Farplane to find various people talking to dead loved ones (not always the same people). More political fallout from Operation Mi'ihen: the Guado take over guarding the Highroad (which the Djose Knights used to guard). Half of Spira is buzzing about Lady Yuna's wedding. That news has only just reached the beach in Besaid, however; most of the villagers don't know. (Motherly Lady doesn't approve!)
-- After Macalania Temple, you can't backtrack until after confronting Yunalesca. Once you unlock the airship navigation map, you'll find all of Spira in turmoil. Many places are hunting Lady Yuna, and you can't enter the temples. The villagers of Besaid shield Lady Yuna from those hunting her. The warrior monks and Guado have abandoned guarding Luca and the Highroad. Many people (especially Lucans) are starting to favor the Crusaders who have regrouped and started protecting them after the warrior monks flee to protect Mika in Bevell. In Guadosalam, you will be given a frosty welcome by Tromell. (He won't hurt you, he'll just whinge. And then go to the Farplane to whinge some more.) Luzzu or Gatta will be back in Besaid.
-- After you talk to Lord Mika about Yu Yevon, before you take on Sin, you can re-enter the temples and visit the Fayth in their chambers. Each of them tells Tidus something. Maechen is also lurking in the Ronso village (what's left of it), where he will give you The Secret History of Yevon and Spira. Various parts of Spira are chattering about the airship. The Crusaders down in the Gorge are planning to regroup and try a new Operation Mi'ihen, so you'd better hurry! In general, many people are questioning Bevelle and Yevon, and rumors about chaos in Bevelle are flying everywhere. (If you stop by, you'll meet Isaaru's brothers guarding Bevelle, saying that Isaaru has come back to try and settle things down.)

Besaid Village: NPCs Are People, Too

My favorite part of being obsessive compulsive about FFX was when I began to realize that most of the NPCs in Besaid, Kilika and to some extent Luca have mini-stories of their own.

We have:

Gramps. The garrulous elder of the village, he will instruct Tidus patiently. Nice old coot, but he's a little set in his ways:
She nags Tidus every time he comes back. ("What have you done to Lady Yuna?!" and so on.)

The fisherman. His house is the first on the right. He constantly frets about Sin, torn between the need to provide for his family and his fear of not coming back.

Vilucha. The fisherman's wife. A rather conservative woman who chooses to pray in private, not the temple, obviously cares a great deal about what's going on, and starts questioning the temple elders towards the end (after you get the airship).

The fisherman and Vilucha's son. Half the time he wants to be a blitzer, the other half the time an Auroch.

Yuna's little friend. Possibly an orphan. She makes a lot of comments that make you go "ouch," like "when Yuna finishes her pilgrimage, then we can do such-and-such!" and "I wanna be a summoner like Yuna!"

Motherly Lady and fabric merchant. She just lost a shipment of wares to Sin, but seems to be too busy playing Mom to the whole village to worry about it. She's usually found babysitting the kids on the beach, scolding the Crusaders for being stupid, or otherwise spewing maternal good sense.

The Sad Woman. She just arrived in Besaid after losing her home to Sin. She drifts around in a shellshocked way, saying gloomy things. Towards the end of the game she finally decides to start a new life in Besaid.

The Old Weaver, another village curmudgeon, who usually sticks to his loom and spouts truisms. Legendary for staying at his loom even when Sin was attacking. Leaves his work to say goodbye to Lady Yuna, though.

The Young Weaver. Seems to find a lot of excuses to wander around not doing his work. I seem to recall him saying he was born when the village was last attacked by Sin -- evidently when Wakka's and Lulu's parents were killed-- and that it was burned to the ground.

The Opportunist. He's always lurking around the weavers speculating about starting a fabric business, but never gets around to it.

The Shopkeeper. At one point she takes the two youngest kids on a trip (apparently) to Luca, teaching them. Great tattoos.

The Shopkeeper's little sister. Very friendly. Owner of the doggie which gives you something slobbery that turns out to be very useful if you go back to the vilage.

The Handyman. Usually found hanging around the Crusaders Lodge, trying to find ways to help since he's too much of a chicken to fight fiends. (At one point, quoting a rather obscure Beatles song, he says he's "fixing a hole where the rain gets in.") Seems to have a crush on Yuna.

The Temple Lurker. I suspect she's another temple-raised orphan like Yuna; she never leaves the temple except to watch Yuna summon Valefor. She seems to have a great deal of respect for Lulu.

Crusader who's lost his memory to Sin's toxin.

Only other boy in the village. He was born at the beginning of Braska's Calm, I think I recall him saying.

The Priestess. Spouts pieties, but even she has a spark of personality:

(After you regain the airship, before talking to Lord Mika)
Priestess: Even here in Besaid we've got orders to arrest Lady Yuna. Nobody knows what to do, but we certainly wouldn't do THAT!
¬Those warrior monks that came to the island were just a bunch of crooks, ya?
There's two priests: the Senior Priest with the white stripe on his collar who's usually guarding the entrance to the Cloister of Trials, and the Old Monk who's usually lurking in the monks' quarters, and is kind to Tidus.

Finally, there's a sailor in a blue cap who seems to have decided lazing around Besaid is more fun than working!

I was expecting another "Good grief, get a life!" response. Thanks. :)

After Operation Mi'ihen I just wanted to lay down and cry... so I'm sure I didn't do any backtracking. But thanks for pointing that out - I'll definitely try it on the next playthrough.

Is that woman from Kilika or is she there from the beginning of the game?

No, she's in Besaid for the whole game. There's a couple other refugees from Kilika you meet later at the game (one couple at the Moonflow, e.g.) But evidently the Sad Woman (she doesn't have a name) lost her home before that. Sin's been busy.
